In this companion piece to [9], some variations on the main results there are sketched. In particular, • the recursions in [9], which we interpreted as the quantum Lefschetz, is re- formulated in terms of Givental’s quantization formalism, or equivalently, a summation of finitely many graphs; • varietiesofmodificationoftheauxilliaryspaces(masterspaces)forthefixed point localization are given, leading to different (looking) recursions; • applications of this circle of ideas to derive (apparently) new relations of Gromov–Witten invariants.

If M is a hyperbolic 3-manifold with a quasigeodesic flow, then we show that 1(M) acts in a natural way on a closed disc by homeomorphisms. Consequently, such a flow either has a closed orbit or the action on the boundary circle is M¨obius-like but not conjugate into PSL(2,R).We conjecture that the latter possibility cannot occur.

We give a shorter proof of the existence of nontrivial closed minimal hypersurfaces in closed smooth (n + 1)-dimensional Riemannian manifolds, a theorem proved first by Pitts for 2 ≤ n ≤ 5 and extended later by Schoen and Simon to any n.

We study the local curvature estimates of long-time solutions to the normalized Kähler-Ricci flow on compact Kähler manifolds with semi-ample canonical line bundle. Using these estimates, we prove that on such a manifold, the set of singular fibers of the semi-ample fibration on which the Riemann curvature blows up at time-infinity is independent of the choice of the initial Kähler metric. Moreover, when a regular fiber of the semi-ample fibration is not a finite quotient of a torus, we determine the exact curvature blow-up rate of the Kähler-Ricci flow near the regular fiber.

The chapter discusses the group actions on R³. The Smith conjecture has many equivalent forms, and each of these forms has various consequences and generalizations. The Smith conjecture is a structure theorem about symmetries of the product of a compact surface with an interval. Here the interval may be closed or open. The usual Smith conjecture is equivalent to proving the smooth <i>Z_n</i> actions on <i>S</i>² [0, 1] are conjugate to actions that preserve the product structure. This generalized Smith conjecture represents the belief that all the symmetries of the product of a compact surface with an interval actually arise from the symmetries of the surface extended trivially to the product structure.
