We consider the inverse curvature flow of strictly convex hypersurfaces in the space form N of constant sectional curvature K_N with speed given by F^{−α}, where α∈(0,1] for K_N=0,−1 and α=1 for K_N=1, F is a smooth, symmetric homogeneous of degree one function which is inverse concave and has dual F_∗ approaching zero on the boundary of the positive cone Γ_+. We show that the ratio of the largest principal curvature to the smallest principal curvature of the flow hypersurface is controlled by its initial value. This can be used to prove the smooth convergence of the flows.

Given a family of nodal curves, a semistable modification of it is another family made up of curves obtained by inserting chains of rational curves of any given length at certain nodes of certain curves of the original family. We give comparison theorems between torsion-free, rank-1 sheaves in the former family and invertible sheaves in the latter. We apply them to show that there are functorial isomorphisms between the compactifications of relative Jacobians of families of nodal curves constructed through Caporaso’s approach and those constructed through Pandharipande’s approach.

Let S be a compact, orientable surface of hyperbolic type and let ψ be a mapping class of S. The present article shows that there exists a finite cover X of S and a lift ψ_X of ψ to X such that the spectral radius of ψ_X, viewed as an automorphism of H_1(X,C), is greater than one if and only if ψ has infinite order and is not a Dehn multitwist. Among the corollaries of this result is the fact that a compact, irreducible 3-manifold with toroidal or empty boundary and positive simplicial volume admits a finite cover for which the multivariable Alexander polynomial is not identically zero and has Mahler measure strictly greater than one; such a manifold also admits a finite cover whose integral first homology has nontrivial torsion. An independent proof of the main result of this paper was given by A. Hadari [Geom. Topol. 24 (2020), no. 4, 1717–1750; MR4173920]. In that paper, the surface was assumed to have at least one boundary component, but stronger control over the required finite covers was obtained.

We prove that a general miraculous cancellation formula, the divisibility of certain characteristic numbers, and some other topological results related to the generalized Rochlin invariant, the -invariant and the holonomies of certain determinant line bundles, are consequences of the modular invariance of elliptic operators on loop space.
