This paper addresses the problem of approximate merging of two adjacent B-spline curves into one B-spline curve. The basic idea of the approach is to find the conditions for precise merging of two B-spline curves, and perturb the control points of the curves by constrained optimization subject to satisfying these conditions. To obtain a merged curve without superfluous knots, we present a new knot adjustment algorithm for adjusting the end k knots of a kth order B-spline curve without changing its shape. The more general problem of merging curves to pass through some target points is also discussed.

Delaunay meshes (DM) are a special type of triangle mesh where the local Delaunay condition holds everywhere. We present an efficient algorithm to convert an arbitrary manifold triangle mesh M into a Delaunay mesh. We show that the constructed DM has O(Kn) vertices, where n is the number of vertices in M and K is a model-dependent constant. We also develop a novel algorithm to simplify Delaunay meshes, allowing a smooth choice of detail levels. Our methods are conceptually simple, theoretically sound and easy to implement. The DM construction algorithm also scales well due to its O(nK logK) time complexity. Delaunay meshes have many favorable geometric and numerical properties. For example, a DM has exactly the same geometry as the input mesh, and it can be encoded by any mesh data structure. Moreover, the empty geodesic circumcircle property implies that the commonly used cotangent Laplace-Beltrami operator has non-negative weights. Therefore, the existing digital geometry processing algorithms can benefit the numerical stability of DM without changing any codes. We observe that DMs can improve the accuracy of the heat method for computing geodesic distances. Also, popular parameterization techniques, such as discrete harmonic mapping, produce more stable results on the DMs than on the input meshes.

A model based sound amplification method is proposed and studied to enhance the ability of the hearing impaired. The model consists of mechanical equations on basilar membrane and outer hair cell (OHC). The OHC is described by a nonlinear nonlocal feedforward model. In addition, a perceptive correction is defined to account for the lumped effect of higher level auditory processing, motivated by the intelligibility function of the hearing impaired. The gain functions are computed by matching the impaired model output to the perceptively weighted normal output, and qualitative agreement is achieved with NAL-NL1 prescription on clean signals. For noisy signals, an adaptive gain strategy is proposed based on the signal to noise ratios (SNR) computed by the model. The adaptive gain functions provide less gain as SNRs decrease so that the intelligibility can be higher with the adaptivity.

Motivated by applications in nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, we introduce a novel blind source separation (BSS) approach to treat nonnegative and correlated data. We consider the (over)-determined case where n sources are to be separated from n linear mixtures (n). Among the n source signals, there are n partially overlapping (Po) sources and one positive everywhere (Pe) source. This condition is applicable for many real-world signals such as NMR spectra of urine and blood serum for metabolic fingerprinting and disease diagnosis. The geometric properties of the mixture matrix and the sparseness structure of the source signals (in a transformed domain) are crucial to the identification of the mixing matrix and the sources.
