We call a finite set ${\mathcal{D}}\subset {\Bbb Z}^s$ a {\it (self-affine) tile digit set} with respect to an expanding integral matrix ${\bf A}$ if the self-affine set $T({\bf A}, \D)$ is a tile in ${\Bbb R}^s$. It has been a widely open problem to characterize the tile digit sets for a given ${\bf A}$. While there are substantial investigations on ${\Bbb R}$, there is no result on ${\Bbb R}^s$ other than the case where $|\det {\bf A}| =p$ with $p$ a prime. In this paper, we make an initiation to study a basic case ${\bf A} = p{\bf I}_2$ in ${\Bbb R}^2$. We characterize the tile digit sets by making use of the zeros of the mask polynomial of ${\mathcal{D}}$ associated with a tile criterion of Kenyon [K], together with a recent result of Iosevich {\it et al} on factorization of sets in ${\Bbb Z}_p \times {\Bbb Z}_p$ [IMP].

We discuss Waldspurger’s local period integral for newforms in new cases. The main tool is the work of Hu and Nelson (2018) on Waldspurger’s period integral using minimal vectors, and the explicit relation between newforms and minimal vectors. We use a representation-theoretical trick to simplify computations for newforms. As an example, we compute the local integral coming from a special arithmetic setting which was used to study the 3-part full BSD conjecture by Hu et al. (2019).

The endoscopic classification via the stable trace formula comparison provides certain character relations between irreducible cuspidal automorphic representations of classical groups and their global Arthur parameters, which are certain automorphic representations of general linear groups. It is a question of J. Arthur and W. Schmid that asks how to construct concrete modules for irreducible cuspidal automorphic representations of classical groups in term of their global Arthur parameters? In this paper, we formulate a general construction of concrete modules, using Bessel periods, for cuspidal automorphic representations of classical groups with generic global Arthur parameters. Then we establish the theory for orthogonal and unitary groups, based on certain well expected conjectures. Among the consequences of the theory in this paper is that the global Gan-Gross-Prasad conjecture for those classical groups is proved in full generality in one direction and with a global assumption in the other direction.
