Computing stationary states is an important topic for phase field crystal (PFC) models. Great efforts have been made for energy dissipation of the numerical schemes when using gradient flows. However, it is always time-consuming due to the requirement of small effective time steps. In this paper, we propose an adaptive accelerated proximal gradient method for finding the stationary states of PFC models. The energy dissipation is guaranteed and the convergence property is established for the discretized energy functional. Moreover, the connections between generalized proximal operator with classical (semi-)implicit and explicit schemes for gradient flow are given. Extensive numerical experiments, including two three dimensional periodic crystals in Landau-Brazovskii (LB) model and a two dimensional quasicrystal in Lifshitz-Petrich (LP) model, demonstrate that our approach has adaptive time steps which lead to significant acceleration over semi-implicit methods for computing complex structures. Furthermore, our result reveals a deep physical mechanism of the simple LB model via which the sigma phase is first discovered.

In this paper, we develop a mass conservative multiscale method for coupled flow and transport in heterogeneous porous media. We consider a coupled system consisting of a convection-dominated transport equation and a flow equation. We construct a coarse grid solver based on the Generalized Multiscale Finite Element Method (GMsFEM) for a coupled system. In particular, multiscale basis functions are constructed based on some snapshot spaces for the pressure and the concentration equations and some local spectral decompositions in the snapshot spaces. The resulting approach uses a few multiscale basis functions in each coarse block (for both the pressure and the concentration) to solve the coupled system. We use the mixed framework, which allows mass conservation. Our main contributions are:(1) the development of a mass conservative GMsFEM for the coupled flow and transport;(2) the development of a robust multiscale method for convection-dominated transport problems by choosing appropriate test and trial spaces within Petrov-Galerkin mixed formulation. We present numerical results and consider several heterogeneous permeability fields. In this paper, we study the ill posed Perona-Malik equation of image processing [14], and the regularized P-M model i.e. C-model proposed by Catte et al. [4]. The authors present the convex compound of these two models in the form of the system of partial differential equations. The weak solution for the equations is proved in detail. The additive operator splitting (AOS) algorithm for the proposed model is also given. Finally, we show some numeric experiment results on images.

Greedy forwarding with geographical locations in a wireless sensor network may fail at a local minimum. In this paper we propose to use conformal mapping to compute a new embedding of the sensor nodes in the plane such that greedy forwarding with the virtual coordinates guarantees delivery. In particular, we extract a planar triangulation of the sensor network with non-triangular faces as holes, by either using the nodes' location or using a landmark-based scheme without node location. The conformal map is computed with Ricci flow such that all the non-triangular faces are mapped to perfect circles. Thus greedy forwarding will never get stuck at an intermediate node. The computation of the conformal map and the virtual coordinates is performed at a preprocessing phase and can be implemented by local gossip-style computation. In this paper, we propose an unfitted Nitsche's method to compute the band structures of phononic crystal with impurities of general geometry. The proposed method does not require the background mesh to fit the interfaces of impurities, and thus avoids the expensive cost of generating body-fitted meshes and simplifies the inclusion of interface conditions in the formulation. The quasi-periodic boundary conditions are handled by the Floquet-Bloch transform, which converts the computation of band structures into an eigenvalue problem with periodic boundary conditions. More importantly, we show the well-posedness of the proposed method using a delicate argument based on the trace inequality, and further prove the convergence by the Babuška-Osborn theory. We achieve the optimal convergence rate at the presence of the impurities of general geometry. We confirm the theoretical results by two numerical examples, and show the capability of the proposed methods for computing the band structures without fitting the interfaces of impurities.
