Accurate simulation of seismic waves is of critical importance in a variety of geophysical applications. Based on recent works on staggered discontinuous Galerkin methods, we have developed a new method for the simulations of seismic waves, which has energy conservation and extremely low grid dispersion, so that it naturally provided accurate numerical simulations of wave propagation useful for geophysical applications and was a generalization of classical staggered-grid finite-difference methods. Moreover, it could handle with ease irregular surface topography and discontinuities in the subsurface models. Our new method discretized the velocity and the stress tensor on this staggered grid, with continuity imposed on different parts of the mesh. This article studies the problem of image restoration of observed images corrupted by impulse noise and mixed Gaussian impulse noise. Since the pixels damaged by impulse noise contain no information about the true image, how to find this set correctly is a very important problem. We propose two methods based on blind inpainting and $\ell_0$ minimization that can simultaneously find the damaged pixels and restore the image. By iteratively restoring the image and updating the set of damaged pixels, these methods have better performance than other methods, as shown in the experiments. In addition, we provide convergence analysis for these methods; these algorithms will converge to coordinatewise minimum points. In addition, they will converge to local minimum points (or with probability one) with some modifications in the algorithms.

The objective of this paper is to design novel multi-layer neural network architectures for multiscale simulations of flows taking into account the observed data and physical modeling concepts. Our approaches use deep learning concepts combined with local multiscale model reduction methodologies to predict flow dynamics. Using reduced-order model concepts is important for constructing robust deep learning architectures since the reduced-order models provide fewer degrees of freedom. Flow dynamics can be thought of as multi-layer networks. More precisely, the solution (eg, pressures and saturations) at the time instant n+ 1 depends on the solution at the time instant n+ 1 and input parameters, such as permeability fields, forcing terms, and initial conditions. One can regard the solution as a multi-layer network, where each layer, in general, is a nonlinear forward map and the number of layers relates to the internal time steps. We will rely on rigorous model reduction concepts to define unknowns and connections for each layer. In each layer, our reduced-order models will provide a forward map, which will be modified (" trained") using available data. It is critical to use reduced-order models for this purpose, which will identify the regions of influence and the appropriate number of variables. Because of the lack of available data, the training will be supplemented with computational data as needed and the interpolation between data-rich and data-deficient models. We study a robust and efficient eigensolver for computing a few smallest positive eigenvalues of the three-dimensional Maxwell’s transmission eigenvalue problem. The discretized governing equations by the Nedelec edge element result in a large-scale quadratic eigenvalue problem (QEP) for which the spectrum contains many zero eigenvalues and the coefficient matrices consist of patterns in the matrix form XY^{−1}Z, both of which prevent existing eigenvalue solvers from being efficient. To remedy these difficulties, we rewrite the QEP as a particular nonlinear eigenvalue problem and develop a secant-type iteration, together with an indefinite locally optimal block preconditioned conjugate gradient method (LOBPCG), to sequentially compute the desired positive eigenvalues. Furthermore, we propose a novel method to solve the linear systems in each iteration of LOBPCG. Intensive numerical experiments show that our proposed method is robust, although the desired real eigenvalues are surrounded by complex eigenvalues.
