In this paper, we consider the harmonic extension problem, which is widely used in many applications of machine learning. We formulate the harmonic extension as solving a Laplace-Beltrami equation with Dirichlet boundary condition. We use the point integral method (PIM) to solve the Laplace-Beltrami equation. The basic idea of the PIM method is to approximate the Laplace equation using an integral equation, which is easy to be discretized from points. Based on the integral equation, we found that traditional graph Laplacian method (GLM) may fail to approximate the harmonic functions in the classical sense. For the Laplace-Beltrami equation with Dirichlet boundary, we can prove the convergence of the point integral method. The point integral method is also very easy to implement, which only requires a minor modification of the graph Laplacian. One important application of the harmonic extension in machine learning is semi-supervised learning. We run a popular semi-supervised learning algorithm by Zhu et al. over a couple of well-known datasets and compare the performance of the aforementioned approaches. Our experiments show the PIM performs the best. We also apply PIM to an image recovery problem and show it outperforms GLM. Finally, on a model problem of Laplace-Beltrami equation with Dirichlet boundary, we prove the convergence of the point integral method.

Solitary waves bifurcated from edges of Bloch bands in two-dimensional periodic media are determined both analytically and numerically in the context of a two-dimensional nonlinear Schrödinger equation with a periodic potential. Using multiscale perturbation methods, the envelope equations of solitary waves near Bloch bands are analytically derived. These envelope equations reveal that solitary waves can bifurcate from edges of Bloch bands under either focusing or defocusing nonlinearity, depending on the signs of the second-order dispersion coefficients at the edge points. Interestingly, at edge points with two linearly independent Bloch modes, the envelope equations lead to a host of solitary wave structures, including reduced-symmetry solitons, dipole-array solitons, vortex-cell solitons, and so on—many of which have not been reported before to our knowledge. It is also shown analytically that the centers of envelope solutions can be positioned at only four possible locations at or between potential peaks. Numerically, families of these solitary waves are directly computed both near and far away from the band edges. Near the band edges, the numerical solutions spread over many lattice sites, and they fully agree with the analytical solutions obtained from the envelope equations. Far away from the band edges, solitary waves are strongly localized, with intensity and phase profiles characteristic of individual families.

We propose a dynamically bi-orthogonal method (DyBO) to solve time dependent stochastic partial differential equations (SPDEs). The objective of our method is to exploit some intrinsic sparse structure in the stochastic solution by constructing the sparsest representation of the stochastic solution via a bi-orthogonal basis. It is well-known that the KarhunenLoeve expansion (KLE) minimizes the total mean squared error and gives the sparsest representation of stochastic solutions. However, the computation of the KL expansion could be quite expensive since we need to form a covariance matrix and solve a large-scale eigenvalue problem. The main contribution of this paper is that we derive an equivalent system that governs the evolution of the spatial and stochastic basis in the KL expansion. In this paper we develop a leap-frog-type finite element method for modeling the electromagnetic wave propagation in metamaterials. The metamaterial model equations are represented by integrodifferential Maxwell’s equations, which are quite challenging to analyze and solve in that we have to solve a coupled problem with different partial differential equations given in different material regions. Our method is based on a mixed finite element method using edge elements, which can easily handle the tangential continuity of the electric field. Stability analysis and optimal error estimate are carried out for the proposed scheme. The scheme is implemented and confirmed to obey the proved optimal convergence rate by using a smooth analytical solution. Then the scheme is extended to model wave propagation in heterogeneous media composed of metamaterials and free space, and extensive numerical results (using a rectangular edge element, a triangular edge element, and mixed edge elements) demonstrate the effectiveness of our algorithm for modeling the exotic backward wave propagation phenomenon in metamaterials. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first paper with an exhaustive simulation of backward wave propagation in metamaterials using time-domain finite element methods.

Based on the double shockwave approximation procedure, a local Riemann solver for strongly nonlinear equations of state (EOS) such as the Jones-Wilkins-Lee (JWL) EOS is presented, which has suppressed successfully numerical oscillation caused by high-density ratio and high-pressure ratio across the interface between explosion products and air. The real ghost fluid method (RGFM) and the level set method have been used for converting multi-medium flows into pure flows and for implicitly tracking the interface, respectively. A fifth order finite difference weighted essentially non-oscillatory (WENO) scheme and a third order TVD Runge-Kutta method are utilized for the spatial discretization and the time advance, respectively. An enclosed-type MPI-based parallel methodology for the RGFM procedure on a uniform structured mesh is presented to realize the parallelization of three-dimensional {\color{red}(3D)} air explosion. The overall process of 3D air explosion of both TNT and aluminized explosives has been successfully simulated.
