Based on the double shockwave approximation procedure, a local Riemann solver for strongly nonlinear equations of state (EOS) such as the Jones-Wilkins-Lee (JWL) EOS is presented, which has suppressed successfully numerical oscillation caused by high-density ratio and high-pressure ratio across the interface between explosion products and air. The real ghost fluid method (RGFM) and the level set method have been used for converting multi-medium flows into pure flows and for implicitly tracking the interface, respectively. A fifth order finite difference weighted essentially non-oscillatory (WENO) scheme and a third order TVD Runge-Kutta method are utilized for the spatial discretization and the time advance, respectively. An enclosed-type MPI-based parallel methodology for the RGFM procedure on a uniform structured mesh is presented to realize the parallelization of three-dimensional {\color{red}(3D)} air explosion. The overall process of 3D air explosion of both TNT and aluminized explosives has been successfully simulated.

In this paper, we present a mixed generalized multiscale finite element method (GMsFEM) for solving flow in heterogeneous media. Our approach constructs multiscale basis functions following a GMsFEM framework and couples these basis functions using a mixed finite element method, which allows us to obtain a mass conservative velocity field. To construct multiscale basis functions for each coarse edge, we design a snapshot space that consists of fine-scale velocity fields supported in a union of two coarse regions that share the common interface. The snapshot vectors have zero Neumann boundary conditions on the outer boundaries, and we prescribe their values on the common interface. We describe several spectral decompositions in the snapshot space motivated by the analysis. In the paper, we also study oversampling approaches that enhance the accuracy of mixed GMsFEM. Positivity-preserving discontinuous Galerkin (DG) methods for solving hyperbolic conservation laws have been extensively studied in the last several years. But nearly all the developed schemes are coupled with explicit time discretizations. Explicit discretizations suffer from the constraint for the Courant-Friedrichs-Levis (CFL) number. This makes explicit methods impractical for problems involving unstructured and extremely varying meshes or long-time simulations. Instead, implicit DG schemes are often popular in practice, especially in the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) community. In this paper we develop a high-order positivity-preserving DG method with the backward Euler time discretization for conservation laws. We focus on one spatial dimension, however the result easily generalizes to multidimensional tensor product meshes and polynomial spaces. This work is based on a generalization of the positivity-preserving limiters in (X. Zhang and C.-W. Shu, Journal of Computational Physics, 229 (2010), pp.~3091--3120) and (X. Zhang and C.-W. Shu, Journal of Computational Physics, 229 (2010), pp.~8918--8934) to implicit time discretizations. Both the analysis and numerical experiments indicate that a lower bound for the CFL number is required to obtain the positivity-preserving property. The proposed scheme not only preserves the positivity of the numerical approximation without compromising the designed high-order accuracy, but also helps accelerate the convergence towards the steady-state solution and add robustness to the nonlinear solver. Numerical experiments are provided to support these conclusions.

In this paper, we discuss high order finite difference weighted essentially non-oscillatory (WENO) schemes, coupled with total variation diminishing (TVD) Runge-Kutta (RK) temporal integration, for solving the semilinear hyperbolic system of a correlated random walk model describing movement of animals and cells in biology. Since the solutions to this system are non-negative, we discuss a positivity-preserving limiter without compromising accuracy. Analysis is performed to justify the maintanance of third order spatial / temporal accuracy when the limiters are applied to a third order finite difference scheme and third order TVD-RK time discretization for solving this model. Numerical results are also provided to demonstrate these methods up to fifth order accuracy.

In this article, we consider the time-dependent Maxwell’s equations modeling wave propagation in metamaterials. One-order higher global superclose results in the L2 norm are proved for several semidiscrete and fully discrete schemes developed for solving this model using nonuniform cubic and rectangular edge elements. Furthermore, L ∞ superconvergence at element centers is proved for the lowest order rectangular edge element. To our best knowledge, such pointwise superconvergence result and its proof are original, and we are unaware of any other publications on this issue.
