In this paper, we apply local discontinuous Galerkin methods to the compressible wormhole propagation. Optimal error estimates for the pressure, velocity, porosity and concentration in different norms are established on non-uniform grids. Numerical experiments are presented to verify the theoretical analysis and show the good performance of the LDG scheme for compressible wormhole propagation.

In this paper, we develop bound-preserving discontinuous Galerkin (DG) methods for the coupled system of compressible miscible displacement problems. We consider the problem with two components and the (volumetric) concentration of the $i$th component of the fluid mixture, $c_i$, should be between $0$ and $1$. However, $c_i$ does not satisfy the maximum principle. Therefore, the numerical techniques introduced in (X. Zhang and C.-W. Shu, Journal of Computational Physics, 229 (2010), 3091-3120) cannot be applied directly. The main idea is to apply the positivity-preserving techniques to both $c_1$ and $c_2$, respectively and enforce $c_1+c_2=1$ simultaneously to obtain physically relevant approximations. By doing so, we have to treat the time derivative of the pressure $dp/dt$ as a source in the concentration equation. Moreover, $c_i's$ are not the conservative variables, as a result, the classical bound-preserving limiter in (X. Zhang and C.-W. Shu, Journal of Computational Physics, 229 (2010), 3091-3120) cannot be applied. Therefore, another limiter will be introduced. Numerical experiments will be given to demonstrate the accuracy in $L^\infty$-norm and good performance of the numerical technique.

Wormhole propagation, arising in petroleum engineering, is used to describe the distribution of acid and the increase of porosity in carbonate reservoir under dissolution of injected acid. The important physical features of porosity and acid concentration include their boundedness between $0$ and $1$, as well as the monotone increasing for porosity. How to keep these properties in the simulation is crucial to the robustness of the numerical algorithm. In this paper, we propose high-order bound-preserving discontinuous Galerkin methods to keep these important physical properties. The main technique is to introduce a new variable $r$ to replace the original acid concentration and use a consistent flux pair to deduce a ghost equation such that the positive-preserving technique can be applied on both original and deduced equations. A high-order slope limiter is used to keep a polynomial upper bound which changes over time for $r$. Moreover, the high-order accuracy is attained by the flux limiter. Numerical examples are given to demonstrate the high-order accuracy and bound-preserving property of the numerical technique.

Firstly, $c_j$ does not satisfy a maximum-principle. Therefore, the numerical techniques introduced in (X. Zhang and C.-W. Shu, Journal of Computational Physics, 229 (2010), 3091-3120) cannot be applied directly. The main idea is to apply the positivity-preserving techniques to all $c_j's$ and enforce $\sum_jc_j=1$ simultaneously to obtain physically relevant approximations. By doing so, we have to treat the time derivative of the pressure $dp/dt$ as a source in the concentration equation and choose suitable fluxes in the pressure and concentration equations. Secondly, it is not easy to construct first-order numerical fluxes for interior penalty DG methods on triangular meshes. One of the key points in the high-order BP technique applied in this paper is the combination of high-order and lower-order numerical fluxes. We will construct second-order BP schemes and use the second-order numerical fluxes as the lower-order one. Finally, the classical slope limiter cannot be applied to $c_j$. To construct the BP technique, we will not approximate $c_j$ directly. Therefore, a new limiter will be introduced. Numerical experiments will be given to demonstrate the high-order accuracy and good performance of the numerical technique.

In this paper, we develop third-order conservative sign-preserving and steady-state-preserving time integrations and seek their applications in multispecies and multireaction chemical reactive flows. In this problem, the density and pressure are nonnegative, and the mass fraction for the ith species, denoted as zi, 1<=i<=M, should be between 0 and 1, where M is the total number of species. There are four main difficulties in constructing high-order bound-preserving techniques for multispecies and multireaction detonations. First of all, most of the bound-preserving techniques available are based on Euler forward time integration. Therefore, for problems with stiff source, the time step will be significantly limited. Secondly, the mass fraction does not satisfy a maximum-principle and hence it is not easy to preserve the upper bound 1. Thirdly, in most of the previous works for gaseous denotation, the algorithm relies on second-order Strang splitting methods where the ux and stiff source terms can be solved separately, and the extension to high-order time discretization seems to be complicated. Finally, most of the previous ODE solvers for stiff problems cannot preserve the total mass and the positivity of the numerical approximations at the same time. In this paper, we will construct third-order conservative sign-preserving Rugne-Kutta and multistep methods to overcome all these difficulties. The time integrations do not depend on the Strang splitting, i.e. we do not split the flux and the stiff source terms. Moreover, the time discretization can handle the stiff source with large time step and preserves the steady-state. Numerical experiments will be given to demonstrate the good performance of the bound-preserving technique and the stability of the scheme for problems with stiff source terms.
