The numerical solution of the one-dimensional nonlinear Klein-Gordon equation on an unbounded domain is studied in this paper. Split local absorbing boundary (SLAB) conditions are obtained by the operator splitting method, then the original problem is reduced to an initial boundary value problem on a bounded computational domain, which can be solved by the finite difference method. Several numerical examples are provided to show the advantages and effectiveness of the given method, and some interesting collision behaviors are also observed.

In this paper we generalize a new type of compact Hermite weighted essentially non-oscillatory (HWENO) limiter for the Runge-Kutta discontinuous Galerkin (RKDG) method, which was recently developed for structured meshes, to two dimensional unstructured meshes. The main idea of this HWENO limiter is to reconstruct the new polynomial by the usage of the entire polynomials of the DG solution from the target cell and its neighboring cells in a least squares fashion while maintaining the conservative property, then use the classical WENO methodology to form a convex combination of these reconstructed polynomials based on the smoothness indicators and associated nonlinear weights. The main advantage of this new HWENO limiter is the robustness for very strong shocks and simplicity in implementation especially for the unstructured meshes considered in this paper, since only information from the target cell and its immediate neighbors is needed. Numerical results for both scalar and system equations are provided to test and verify the good performance of this new limiter.

We study the minimization problem of a non-convex sparsity promoting penalty function, the transformed l_1 (TL1), and its application in compressed sensing (CS). The TL1 penalty interpolates l_1 and l_1 norms through a nonnegative parameter l_1 , similar to l_1 with l_1 , and is known to satisfy unbiasedness, sparsity and Lipschitz continuity properties. We first consider the constrained minimization problem and discuss the exact recovery of l_1 norm minimal solution based on the null space property (NSP). We then prove the stable recovery of l_1 norm minimal solution if the sensing matrix l_1 satisfies a restricted isometry property (RIP). Next, we present difference of convex algorithms for TL1 (DCATL1) in computing TL1-regularized constrained and unconstrained problems in CS. The inner loop concerns an l_1 minimization problem on which we employ the Alternating Direction Method of Multipliers (ADMM). For the unconstrained problem, we prove convergence of DCATL1 to a stationary point satisfying the first order optimality condition. In numerical experiments, we identify the optimal value l_1 , and compare DCATL1 with other CS algorithms on two classes of sensing matrices: Gaussian random matrices and over-sampled discrete cosine transform matrices (DCT). We find that for both classes of sensing matrices, the performance of DCATL1 algorithm (initiated with l_1 minimization) always ranks near the top (if not the top), and is the most robust choice insensitive to the conditioning of the sensing matrix l_1 . The gas dynamics equations, coupled with a static gravitational field, admit the hydrostatic balance where the flux produced by the pressure is exactly canceled by the gravitational source term. Many astrophysical problems involve the hydrodynamical evolution in a gravitational field, therefore it is essential to correctly capture the effect of gravitational force in the simulations. Improper treatment of the gravitational force can lead to a solution which either oscillates around the equilibrium, or deviates from the equilibrium after a long time run. In this paper we design high order well-balanced finite difference WENO schemes to this system, which can preserve the hydrostatic balance state exactly and at the same time can maintain genuine high order accuracy. Numerical tests are performed to verify high order accuracy, well-balanced property, and good resolution for smooth and discontinuous solutions. The main purpose of the well-balanced schemes designed in this paper is to well resolve small perturbations of the hydrostatic balance state on coarse meshes. The more difficult issue of convergence towards such hydrostatic balance state from an arbitrary initial condition is not addressed in this paper.

In this paper, we develop a nodal discontinuous Galerkin method for solving the time-dependent Maxwell’s equations when metamaterials are involved. Both semi- and fully-discrete schemes are constructed. Numerical stability and error estimate are proved for both schemes. Numerical results are presented to demonstrate that the method is not only efficient but also very effective in solving metamaterial Maxwell’s equatons.
