In this paper, we focus on error estimates to smooth solutions of semi-discrete discontinuous Galerkin (DG) methods with quadrature rules for scalar conservation laws. The main techniques we use are energy estimate and Taylor expansion first introduced by Zhang and Shu. We show that, with ${P}^k$ (piecewise polynomials of degree $k$) finite elements in 1D problems, if the quadrature over elements is exact for polynomials of degree $(2k)$, error estimates of $O(h^{k+1/2})$ are obtained for general monotone fluxes, and optimal estimates of $O(h^{k+1})$ are obtained for upwind fluxes. For multidimensional problems, if in addition quadrature over edges is exact for polynomials of degree $(2k+1)$, error estimates of $O(h^k)$ are obtained for general monotone fluxes, and $O(h^{k+1/2})$ are obtained for monotone and sufficiently smooth numerical fluxes. Numerical results validate our analysis.

We introduce a new adaptive method for analyzing nonlinear and nonstationary data. This method is inspired by the empirical mode decomposition (EMD) method and the recently developed compressed sensing theory. The main idea is to look for the sparsest representation of multiscale data within the largest possible dictionary consisting of intrinsic mode functions of the form {a(t) cos(θ(t))}, where a ≥ 0 is assumed to be smoother than cos(θ(t)) and θ is a piecewise smooth increasing function. We formulate this problem as a nonlinear L1 optimization problem. Further, we propose an iterative algorithm to solve this nonlinear optimization problem recursively. We also introduce an adaptive filter method to decompose data with noise. Numerical examples are given to demonstrate the robustness of our method and comparison is made with the EMD method. One advantage of performing such a decomposition is to preserve some intrinsic physical property of the signal, such as trend and instantaneous frequency. Our method shares many important properties of the original EMD method. Because our method is based on a solid mathematical formulation, its performance does not depend on numerical parameters such as the number of shifting or stop criterion, which seem to have a major effect on the original EMD method. Our method is also less sensitive to noise perturbation and the end effect compared with the original EMD method.

With the rapid development of internet economy, transparent logistics is stepping into a prosperity period with massive transportation data generated and collected every day. In this paper, we focus on the segmentation of GPS trajectory data generated in logistics transportation to analyze the vehicle behaviors and extract business affair information according to the vehicle behavior characteristics, which is challenging due to the complexity of trajectory data and unavailability of road information. We extract the stopping points from the trajectory data sequence based on the duration of nonmovement, and construct business time window and electronic fence by analyzing the driving habits of vehicles. In this paper, we present L2 and negative-order norm estimates for the local discontinuous Galerkin (LDG) method solving variable coefficient Schrödinger equations. For these special solutions the LDG method exhibits ‘‘hidden accuracy", and we are able to extract it through the use of a convolution kernel that is composed of a linear combination of B-splines. This technical was initially introduced by Cockburn, Luskin, Shu, and Süli for linear hyperbolic equations and extended by Ryan et al. as a smoothness-increasing accuracy-conserving (SIAC) filter. We demonstrate that it is possible to extend the SIAC filter on Schrödinger equations. When polynomials of degree k are used, we can prove theoretically the LDG method solutions are of order k + 1, whereas the post-processed solutions that convolution with the SIAC filter are of order at least 2k. Additionally, we present numerical results to confirm that the accuracy of LDG solutions can be improved from O(hk+1) to at least O(h2k+1) for Schrödinger equations by using alternating numerical fluxes.
