In this paper, we consider a class of optimization problems of minimizing a (at least) twice continuously dierentiable function (probably nonconvex) f(x) : Rn ! Here, we introduce the notation x[i] 2 Rpi to represent the ith subvector of x 2 Rn and formulate the product of multiple ball/sphere constraints as a set of equality and inequality constraints. To simplify subsequent presentation, we call the above programming the ball/sphere constrained optimization problem (BCOP). We emphasize that this problem does not allow overlap among the variables x[i] and therefore the constraints are separable. However, these variables x[i] may be linked together through the objective function f(x).

Homotopy continuation is an efficient tool for solving polynomial systems. Its efficiency relies on utilizing adaptive stepsize and adaptive precision path tracking, and endgames. In this article, we apply homotopy continuation to solve steady state problems of hyperbolic conservation laws. A third-order accurate finite difference weighted essentially non-oscillatory (WENO) scheme with Lax-Friedrichs flux splitting is utilized to derive the difference equation. This new approach is free of the CFL condition constraint. Extensive numerical examples in both scalar and system test problems in one and two dimensions demonstrate the efficiency and robustness of the new method.

Consider the image restoration from incomplete noisy frequency data with total variation and sparsity regularizing penalty terms. Firstly, we establish an unconstrained optimization model with dierent smooth approximations on the regularizing terms. Then, to weaken the amount of computations for cost functional with total variation term, the alternating iterative scheme is developed to obtain the exact solution through shrinkage thresholding in inner loop, while the nonlinear Euler equation is appropriately linearized at each iteration in exterior loop, yielding a linear system with diagonal coefficient matrix in frequency domain. Finally the linearized iteration is proven to be convergent in generalized sense for suitable regularizing parameters, and the error between the linearized iterative solution and the one gotten from the exact nonlinear Euler equation is rigorously estimated, revealing the essence of the proposed alternative iteration scheme. Numerical tests for different configurations show the validity of the proposed scheme, compared with some existing algorithms.

The immersed boundary method has evolved into one of the most useful computational methods in studying fluid structure interaction. On the other hand, the immersed boundary method is also known to suffer from a severe timestep stability restriction when using an explicit time discretization. In this paper, we propose several efficient semi-implicit schemes to remove this stiffness from the immersed boundary method for the two-dimensional Stokes flow. First, we obtain a novel unconditionally stable semi-implicit discretization for the immersed boundary problem. Using this unconditionally stable discretization as a building block, we derive several efficient semi-implicit schemes for the immersed boundary problem by applying the small scale decomposition to this unconditionally stable discretization. Our stability analysis and extensive numerical experiments show that our semi-implicit schemes offer much better stability property than the explicit scheme. Unlike other implicit or semi-implicit schemes proposed in the literature, our semi-implicit schemes can be solved explicitly in the spectral space. Thus the computational cost of our semi-implicit schemes is comparable to that of an explicit scheme, but with a much better stability property.

In this paper, we consider an interior penalty discontinuous Galerkin (DG) method for the time-dependent Maxwell’s equations in cold plasma. In Huang and Li (J. Sci. Comput., 42 (2009), 321–340), for both semi and fully discrete DG schemes, we proved error estimates which are optimal in the energy norm, but sub-optimal in the L2-norm. Here by filling this gap, we show that these schemes are optimally convergent in the L2-norm on quasi-uniform tetrahedral meshes if the solution is sufficiently smooth.
