Since the development of Yee scheme back in 1966, it has become one of the most popular simulation tools for modeling electromagnetic wave propagation in various situations.However, its rigorous error analysis on nonuniform rectangular type gridswas carried out until 1994 by Monk and Süli. They showed that theYee scheme is still second-order convergent on a nonuniform mesh even though the local truncation error is only of first order. In this paper, we extend their results to Maxwell’s equations in metamaterials by a simpler proof, and show the second-order superconvergence in space for the trueYee scheme instead of the only semi-discrete form discussed in Monk and Süli’s original work. Numerical results supporting our analysis are presented.

For the steady-state solution of an integraldifferential equation from a two-dimensional model in transport theory, we shall derive and study a nonsymmetric algebraic Riccati equation B--XF--F+ X+ XB+ X= 0, where F I-s PD, B-(b I+ s P) D-and B+ b I+ s PD+ with a nonnegative matrix P, positive diagonal matrices D, and nonnegative parameters f, b b/(1-f) and s s/(1-f). We prove the existence of the minimal nonnegative solution X under the physically reasonable assumption f+ b+ s P (D++ D-)< 1, and study its numerical computation by fixed-point iteration, Newtons method and doubling. We shall also study several special cases; eg when b = 0 and P is low-ranked, then X= s 2 UV is low-ranked and can be computed using more efficient iterative processes in U and V. Numerical examples will be given to illustrate our theoretical results.

In this paper, we develop and analyze a new multiscale discontinuous Galerkin (DG) method for one-dimensional stationary Schr\"{o}dinger equations with open boundary conditions \bo{which have highly oscillating solutions}. Our method uses a smaller finite element space than the WKB local DG (WKB-LDG) method while achieving the same order of accuracy with no resonance errors. We prove that the DG approximation converges optimally with respect to the mesh size $h$ in $L^2$ norm without the typical constraint \bo{that $h$ has to be smaller than the wave length}. Numerical experiments were carried out to verify the second order optimal convergence rate of the method and to demonstrate its ability to capture oscillating solutions on coarse meshes in the applications to Schr\"{o}dinger equations.

Nonlinear matrix equations are encountered in many applications of control and engineering problems. In this work, we establish a complete study for a class of nonlinear matrix equations. With the aid of Sherman Morrison Woodbury formula, we have shown that any equation in this class has the maximal positive definite solution under a certain condition. Furthermore, A thorough study of properties about this class of matrix equations is provided. An acceleration of iterative method with R-superlinear convergence with order $r>1$ is then designed to solve the maximal positive definite solution efficiently.
