Since the development of Yee scheme back in 1966, it has become one of the most popular simulation tools for modeling electromagnetic wave propagation in various situations.However, its rigorous error analysis on nonuniform rectangular type gridswas carried out until 1994 by Monk and Süli. They showed that theYee scheme is still second-order convergent on a nonuniform mesh even though the local truncation error is only of first order. In this paper, we extend their results to Maxwell’s equations in metamaterials by a simpler proof, and show the second-order superconvergence in space for the trueYee scheme instead of the only semi-discrete form discussed in Monk and Süli’s original work. Numerical results supporting our analysis are presented.

We analyze the central discontinuous Galerkin (DG) method for time-dependent linear conservation laws. In one dimension, optimal a priori $L^2$ error estimates of order $k+1$ are obtained for the semidiscrete scheme when piecewise polynomials of degree at most $k$ ($k\geq0$) are used on overlapping uniform meshes. %Our analysis is valid for both periodic boundary conditions and %for inflow-outflow boundary conditions. We then extend the analysis to multidimensions on uniform Cartesian meshes when piecewise tensor product polynomials are used on overlapping meshes. Numerical experiments are given to demonstrate the theoretical results.

We consider the Schrodinger equation with a logarithmic nonlinearity and a repulsive harmonic potential. Depending on the parameters of the equation, the solution may or may not be dispersive. When dispersion occurs, it does with an exponential rate in time. To control this, we change the unknown function through a generalized lens transform. This approach neutralizes the possible boundary effects, and could be used in the case of the Schrodinger equation without potential. We then employ standard splitting methods on the new equation via a nonuniform grid, after the logarithmic nonlinearity has been regularized. We also discuss the case of a power nonlinearity and give some results concerning the error estimates of the first-order Lie-Trotter splitting method for both cases of nonlinearities. Finally extensive numerical experiments are reported to investigate the dynamics of the equations.

We propose a generalized multiscale finite element method (GMsFEM) based on clustering algorithm to study the elliptic PDEs with random coefficients in the multi-query setting. Our method consists of offline and online stages. In the offline stage, we construct a small number of reduced basis functions within each coarse grid block, which can then be used to approximate the multiscale finite element basis functions. In addition, we coarsen the corresponding random space through a clustering algorithm. In the online stage, we can obtain the multiscale finite element basis very efficiently on a coarse grid by using the pre-computed multiscale basis. The new GMsFEM can be applied to multiscale SPDE starting with a relatively coarse grid, without requiring the coarsest grid to resolve the smallest-scale of the solution. The new method offers considerable savings in solving multiscale SPDEs. Numerical results are

Differential optical absorption spectroscopy (DOAS) is a powerful tool for detecting and quantifying trace gases in atmospheric chemistry\cite {Platt_Stutz08}. DOAS spectra consist of a linear combination of complex multi-peak multi-scale structures. Most DOAS analysis routines in use today are based on least squares techniques, for example, the approach developed in the 1970s uses polynomial fits to remove a slowly varying background, and known reference spectra to retrieve the identity and concentrations of reference gases. An open problem is to identify unknown gases in the fitting residuals for complex atmospheric mixtures.
