A new residual-based stabilized finite element method is analyzed for solving the Stokes equations in terms of velocity and pressure, where the $H^{−1}$ norm is introduced in the measurement of the residuals to obtain a symmetric positive definite (SPD) method. The $H^{−1}$ norm is computable and can be always easily realized offline by the continuous linear finite element solution or the preconditioned counterpart of the Poisson Dirichlet problem. Although the $H^{−1}$ norm is computed in the linear element space, no matter what the finite element spaces for the velocity and the pressure are, optimal error bounds can be established when using continuous finite element pairs $R_l$−$R_m$ for velocity and pressure for any $l, m\ge 1$. Numerical experiments are performed to confirm the theoretical results obtained.

In this paper, we construct an adaptive multiscale method for solving H(curl)-elliptic problems in highly heterogeneous media. Our method is based on the generalized multiscale finite element method. We will first construct a suitable snapshot space, and a dimensional reduction procedure to identify important modes of the solution. We next develop and analyze an a posteriori error indicator, and the corresponding adaptive algorithm. In addition, we will construct a coupled offlineonline adaptive algorithm, which provides an adaptive strategy to the selection of offline and online basis functions. Our theory shows that the convergence is robust with respect to the heterogeneities and contrast of the media. We present several numerical results to illustrate the performance of our method.

We propose an efficient eigensolver for computing densely distributed spectra of the two-dimensional transmission eigenvalue problem (TEP), which is derived from Maxwell's equations with Tellegen media and the transverse magnetic mode. The governing equations, when discretized by the standard piecewise linear finite element method, give rise to a large-scale quadratic eigenvalue problem (QEP). Our numerical simulation shows that half of the positive eigenvalues of the QEP are densely distributed in some interval near the origin. The quadratic JacobiDavidson method with a so-called non-equivalence deflation technique is proposed to compute the dense spectrum of the QEP. Extensive numerical simulations show that our proposed method processes the convergence efficiently, even when it needs to compute more than 5000 desired eigenpairs. In this paper, we extend the high order finite-difference method with subcell resolution (SR) for two-species stiff one-reaction models to multispecies and multireaction chemical reactive flows, which are significantly more difficult because of the multiple scales generated by different reactions. For reaction problems, when the reaction time scale is very small, the reaction zone scale is also small and the governing equations become very stiff. Wrong propagation speed of discontinuity may occur due to the underresolved numerical solution in both space and time. The present SR method for reactive Euler system is a fractional step method. In the convection step, any high order shock-capturing method can be used. In the reaction step, an ODE solver is applied but with certain computed flow variables in the shock region modified by the Harten subcell resolution idea. Several numerical examples of multispecies and multireaction reactive flows are performed in both one and two dimensions. Studies demonstrate that the SR method can capture the correct propagation speed of discontinuities in very coarse meshes.

In the paper, we consider a continuation approach for the binary quadratic program (BQP) based on a class of NCP-functions. More specifically, we recast the BQP as an equivalent minimization and then seeks its global minimizer via a global continuation method. Such approach had been considered in [11] which is based on the FischerBurmeister function. We investigate this continuation approach again by using a more general function, called the generalized FischerBurmeister function. However, the theoretical background for such extension can not be easily carried over. Indeed, it needs some subtle analysis.
