We study the generalized eigenvalue problems (GEPs) derived from modeling the surface acoustic wave in piezoelectric materials with periodic inhomogeneity. The eigenvalues appear in the reciprocal pairs due to periodic boundary conditions in the modeling. By transforming the GEP into a T-palindromic quadratic eigenvalue problem (TPQEP), the reciprocal relationship of the eigenvalues can be maintained. In this paper, we outline four recently developed structure-preserving algorithms, SA, SDA, TSHIRA and GTSHIRA, for solving the TPQEP. Numerical comparisons on the accuracy and the computational costs of these algorithm are presented. The eigenvalues close to unit circle on the complex plane are of interest in the area of filter and sensor designs. Our numerical results show that the Arnoldi-type structure-preserving algorithms TSHIRA and GTSHIRA with re-symplectic and re-bi-isotropic processes

Surface segmentation is a fundamental problem in computer graphics. It has various applications such as metamorphosis, surface matching, surface compression, 3D shape retrieval, texture mapping, etc. All orientable surfaces are Riemann surfaces, and admit conformal structures. This paper introduces a novel surface segmentation algorithm based on its conformal structure. Each segment can be conformally mapped to a planar rectangle, and the transition maps are planar translations. The segmentation is intrinsic to the surface, independent of the embedding, and consistent for surfaces with similar geometries. By using segmentation based on conformal structure, the mapping between surfaces with arbitrary topologies can be constructed explicitly. The method is rigorous, efficient and automatic. Wind power is an increasingly popular renewable energy. In the design process of the wind turbine blade, the accurate aerodynamic simulation is important. In the past, most of the wind turbine simulations were carried out with some low fidelity methods, such as the blade element momentum method [9]. Recently, with the rapid development of the supercomputers, high fidelity simulations based on 3D unsteady Navier-Stokes (N-S) equations become more popular. For example, Sorensen et al. studied the 3D wind turbine rotor using the Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) framework where a finite volume method and a semi-implicit method are used for the spatial and temporal discretization, respectively [17]. In this paper, we consider the time-dependent Maxwell’s equations when Cole–Cole dispersive medium is involved. The Cole–Cole model contains a fractional time derivative term, which couples with the standard Maxwell’s equations in free space and creates some challenges in developing and analyzing time-domain finite element methods for solving this model as mentioned in our earlier work [J. Li, J. Sci. Comput., 47 (2001), pp. 1–26]. By adopting some techniques developed for the fractional diffusion equations [V.J. Ervin, N. Heuer, and J.P. Roop, SIAM J. Numer. Anal., 45 (2007), pp. 572–591], [Y. Lin and C. Xu, J. Comput. Phys., 225 (2007), pp. 1533–1552], [F. Liu, P. Zhuang, V. Anh, I. Turner, and K. Burrage, Appl. Math. Comput., 191 (2007), pp. 12–20], we propose two fully discrete mixed finite element schemes for the Cole–Cole model. Numerical stability and optimal error estimates are proved for both schemes. The proposed algorithms are implemented and detailed numerical results are provided to justify our theoretical analysis.

In this paper, we apply semi-Lagrangian discontinuous Galerkin (SLDG) methods for linear hyperbolic equations in one space dimension and analyze the error between the numerical and exact solutions under the L2-norm. In all the previous works, the theoretical analysis of the SLDG method would suggest a suboptimal convergence rate due to the error accumulation over time steps. However, numerical experiments demonstrate an optimal convergence rate and, if the terminal time is large, a superconvergence rate. In this paper, we will prove optimal convergence and optimal superconvergence rates. There are three main difficulties: 1. The error analysis on overlapping meshes. Due to the nature of the semi-Lagrangian time discretization, we need to introduce the background Eulerian mesh and the shifted mesh. The two meshes are staggered, and it is not easy to construct local projections and to handle the error accumulation during time evolution. 2. The superconvergence of time dependent terms under the L2-norm. The error of the numerical and exact solutions can be divided into two parts, the projection error and the time dependent superconvergence term. The projection strongly depends on the superconvergence rates. Therefore, we need to construct a sequence of projections and improve the superconvergence rates gradually. 3. The stopping criterion of the sequence of projections. The sequence of projections are basically of the same form. We need to show that the projections exist up to some certain order since the superconvergence rate cannot be innity. Hence, we will seek some \hidden" condition for the existence of the projections. In this paper, we will solve all the three difficulties and construct several local projections to prove the optimal convergence and superconvergence rates. Numerical experiments verify the theoretical ndings.
