Wormhole propagation, arising in petroleum engineering, is used to describe the distribution of acid and the increase of porosity in carbonate reservoir under dissolution of injected acid. The important physical features of porosity and acid concentration include their boundedness between $0$ and $1$, as well as the monotone increasing for porosity. How to keep these properties in the simulation is crucial to the robustness of the numerical algorithm. In this paper, we propose high-order bound-preserving discontinuous Galerkin methods to keep these important physical properties. The main technique is to introduce a new variable $r$ to replace the original acid concentration and use a consistent flux pair to deduce a ghost equation such that the positive-preserving technique can be applied on both original and deduced equations. A high-order slope limiter is used to keep a polynomial upper bound which changes over time for $r$. Moreover, the high-order accuracy is attained by the flux limiter. Numerical examples are given to demonstrate the high-order accuracy and bound-preserving property of the numerical technique.

Mortar methods are widely used techniques for discretizations of partial differential equations and preconditioners for the algebraic systems resulting from the discretizations. For problems with high contrast and multiple scales, the standard mortar spaces are not robust, and some enrichments are necessary in order to obtain an efficient and robust mortar space. In this paper, we consider a class of flow problems in high contrast heterogeneous media, and develop a systematic approach to obtain an enriched multiscale mortar space. Our approach is based on the constructions of local multiscale basis functions. The multiscale basis functions are constructed from local problems by following the framework of the Generalized Multiscale Finite Element Method (GMsFEM). In particular, we first create a local snapshot space. Then we select the dominated modes within the snapshot space using an appropriate Proper Orthogonal Decomposition (POD) technique. These multiscale basis functions show better accuracy than polynomial basis for multiscale problems. Using the proposed multiscale mortar space, we will construct a multiscale finite element method to solve the flow problem on a coarse grid and a preconditioning technique for the fine scale discretization of the flow problem. In particular, we develop a multiscale mortar mixed finite element method using the mortar space. In addition, we will design a two-level additive preconditioner and a two-level hybrid preconditioner based on the proposed mortar space for the iterative method applied to the fine scale discretization of the flow problem. With rheology applications in mind, we present a fast solver for the time-dependent effective viscosity of an infinite lattice containing one or more neutrally buoyant smooth rigid particles per unit cell, in a two-dimensional Stokes fluid with given shear rate. At each time, the mobility problem is reformulated as a 2nd-kind boundary integral equation, then discretized to spectral accuracy by the Nyström method and solved iteratively, giving typically 10 digits of accuracy. Its solution controls the evolution of particle locations and angles in a first-order system of ordinary differential equations. The formulation is placed on a rigorous footing by defining a generalized periodic Green’s function for the skew lattice. Numerically, the periodized integral operator is split into a near image sum— applied in linear time via the fast multipole method—plus a correction field solved cheaply via proxy Stokeslets. We use barycentric quadratures to evaluate particle interactions and velocity fields accurately, even at distances much closer than the node spacing. Using first- order time-stepping we simulate, for example, 25 ellipses per unit cell to 3-digit accuracy on a desktop in 1 hour per shear time. Our examples show equilibration at long times, force chains, and two types of blow-ups (jamming) whose power laws match lubrication theory asymptotics.

This paper presents a novel mass-conservative mixed multiscale method for solving flow equations in heterogeneous porous media. The media properties (the permeability) contain multiple scales and high contrast. The proposed method solves the flow equation in a mixed formulation on a coarse grid by constructing multiscale basis functions. The resulting velocity field is mass-conservative on the fine grid. Our main goal is to obtain first-order convergence in terms of the mesh size which is independent of local contrast. This is achieved, first, by constructing some auxiliary spaces, which contain global information that cannot be localized, in general. This is built on our previous work on the generalized multiscale finite element method (GMsFEM).
