Several new tests are proposed for examining the adequacy of a family of parametric models against large nonparametric alternatives. These tests formally check if the bias vector of residuals from parametric fits is negligible by using the adaptive Neyman test and other methods. The testing procedures formalize the traditional model diagnostic tools based on residual plots. We examine the rates of contiguous alternatives that can be detected consistently by the adaptive Neyman test. Applications of the procedures to the partially linear models are thoroughly discussed. Our simulation studies show that the new testing procedures are indeed powerful and omnibus. The power of the proposed tests is comparable to the <i>F</i>-test statistic even in the situations where the <i>F</i> test is known to be suitable and can be far more powerful than the <i>F</i>-test statistic in other situations. We propose several statistics to test the Markov hypothesis for -mixing stationary processes sampled at discrete time intervals. Our tests are based on the ChapmanKolmogorov equation. We establish the asymptotic null distributions of the proposed test statistics, showing that Wilkss phenomenon holds. We compute the power of the test and provide simulations to investigate the finite sample performance of the test statistics when the null model is a diffusion process, with alternatives consisting of models with a stochastic mean reversion level, stochastic volatility and jumps.

Local quasi-likelihood estimation is useful for nonparametric modeling in a widely-used exponential family of distributions, called generalized linear models. Yet, the technique cannot be directly applied to situations where a response variable is missing at random. Three local quasi-likelihood estimation techniques are introduced: the local quasi-likelihood estimator using only complete-data; the locally weighted quasi-likelihood method; the local quasi-likelihood estimator with imputed values. These estimators share basically the same first order asymptotic biases and variances. Our simulation results show that substantial efficiency gains can be obtained by using the local quasi-likelihood estimator with imputed values. We develop the local quasi-likelihood imputation methods for estimating the mean functional of the response variable. It is shown that the proposed mean imputation estimators are asymptotically normal with asymptotic variance that can be easily estimated. Data from an ongoing environmental epidemiologic study is used to illustrate the proposed methods.

Statistical estimation and inference for marginal hazard models with varying coefficients for multivariate failure time data are important subjects in survival analysis. A local pseudo-partial likelihood procedure is proposed for estimating the unknown coefficient functions. A weighted average estimator is also proposed in an attempt to improve the efficiency of the estimator. The consistency and asymptotic normality of the proposed estimators are established and standard error formulas for the estimated coefficients are derived and empirically tested. To reduce the computational burden of the maximum local pseudo-partial likelihood estimator, a simple and useful one-step estimator is proposed. Statistical properties of the one-step estimator are established and simulation studies are conducted to compare the performance of the one-step estimator to that of the maximum local pseudo-partial likelihood estimator. Many data mining and statistical machine learning algorithms have been developed to select a subset of covariates to associate with a response variable. Spurious discoveries can easily arise in high-dimensional data analysis due to enormous possibilities of such selections. How can we know statistically our discoveries better than those by chance? In this paper, we define a measure of goodness of spurious fit, which shows how good a response variable can be fitted by an optimally selected subset of covariates under the null model, and propose a simple and effective LAMM algorithm to compute it. It coincides with the maximum spurious correlation for linear models and can be regarded as a generalized maximum spurious correlation. We derive the asymptotic distribution of such goodness of spurious fit for generalized linear models and L1 regression. Such an asymptotic distribution depends on the sample size, ambient dimension, the number of variables used in the fit, and the covariance information. It can be consistently estimated by multiplier bootstrapping and used as a benchmark to guard against spurious discoveries. It can also be applied to model selection, which considers only candidate models with goodness of fits better than those by spurious fits. The theory and method are convincingly illustrated by simulated examples and an application to the binary outcomes from German Neuroblastoma Trials.
