Quadratic regression functionals are important for bandwidth selection of nonparametric regression techniques and for nonparametric goodness-of-fit test. Based on local polynomial regression, we propose estimators for weighted integrals of squared derivatives of regression functions. The rates of convergence in mean square error are calculated under various degrees of smoothness and appropriate values of the smoothing parameter. Asymptotic distributions of the proposed quadratic estimators are considered with the Gaussian noise assumption. It is shown that when the estimators are pseudo-quadratic (linear components dominate quadratic components), asymptotic normality with rate n-1/2 can be achieved.

When estimating a mean regression function and its derivatives, locally weighted least squares regression has proven to be a very attractive technique. The present paper focuses on the important issue of how to select the smoothing parameter or bandwidth. In the case of estimating curves with a complicated structure, a variable bandwidth is desirable. Furthermore, the bandwidth should be indicated by the data themselves. Recent developments in nonparametric smoothing techniques inspired us to propose such a datadriven bandwidth selection procedure, which can be used to select both constant and variable bandwidths. The idea is based on a residual squares criterion along with a good approximation of the bias and variance of the estimator. We present a nonparametric approach for estimating the covariance structure of a quantitative trait measured repeatedly at a series of time points. Specifically, we adopt Huang et al.'s (2006,<i>Biometrika</i><b>93</b>, 8598) approach of invoking the modified Cholesky decomposition and converting the problem into modeling a sequence of regressions of responses. A regularized covariance estimator is obtained using a normal penalized likelihood with an<i>L</i>₂ penalty. Over the last two decades, many exciting variable selection methods have been developed for finding a small group of covariates that are associated with the response from a large pool. Can the discoveries by such data mining approaches be spurious due to high dimensionality and limited sample size? Can our fundamental assumptions on exogeneity of covariates needed for such variable selection be validated with the data? To answer these questions, we need to derive the distributions of the maximum spurious correlations given certain number of predictors, namely, the distribution of the correlation of a response variable Y with the best s linear combinations of p covariates X, even when X and Y are independent. We treat all the bivariate lack-of-memory (BLM) distributions in a unified approach and develop some new general properties of the BLM distributions, including joint moment generating function, product moments, and dependence structure. Necessary and sufficient conditions for the survival functions of BLM distributions to be totally positive of order two are given. Some previous results about specific BLM distributions are improved. In particular, we show that both the Marshall–Olkin survival copula and survival function are totally positive of all orders, regardless of parameters. Besides, we point out that Slepian’s inequality also holds true for BLM distributions.
