Tautological systems developed in [8, 9] are Picard-Fuchs type systems to study period integrals of complete intersections in Fano varieties. We generalize tautological systems to zero loci of global sections of vector bundles. In particular, we obtain similar criterion as in [8, 9] about holonomicity and regularity of the systems. We also prove solution rank formulas and geometric realizations of solutions following the work on hypersurfaces in homogeneous varieties [4].

We investigate the angular distribution of Ly$\alpha$ photons transferring in or emergent from an optically thick medium. Since the evolutions of specific intensity $I$ in the frequency space and the angular space are coupled with each other, we first develop the WENO numerical solver in order to find the time-dependent solutions of the integro-differential equation of $I$ in frequency and angular space simultaneously. We first show that the solutions with the Eddington approximation, which assume $I$ to be linearly dependent on the angular variable $\mu$, yield similar frequency profiles of the photon flux as that without the Eddington approximation. However, the solutions of the $\mu$ distribution evolution are significantly different from that given by Eddington approximation. First, the angular distribution of $I$ are found to be substantially dependent on the frequency of photons. For photons with the resonant frequency $\nu_0$, $I$ contains only a linear term of $\mu$. For photons with frequency at the double peaks of the flux, the $\mu$-distribution is highly anisotropic, in which most photons are in the direction of radial forward. Moreover, either at $\nu_0$ or at the double peaks, the $\mu$ distributions actually are independent of the initial $\mu$ distribution of photons of the source. This is because the photons with frequency either of $\nu_0$ or of the double peaks undergo the process of forgetting their initial conditions due to the resonant scattering. We also show that the optically thick medium is a collimator of photons at the double peaks. Photons from the double peaks form a forward beam with very small spread angle.

Merit function approach is a popular method to deal with complementarity problems, in which the complementarity problem is recast as an unconstrained minimization via merit function or complementarity function. In this paper, for the complementarity problem associated with <i>p</i>-order cone, which is a type of nonsymmetric cone complementarity problem, we show the readers how to construct merit functions for solving <i>p</i>-order cone complementarity problem. In addition, we study the conditions under which the level sets of the corresponding merit functions are bounded, and we also assert that these merit functions provide an error bound for the <i>p</i>-order cone complementarity problem. These results build up a theoretical basis for the merit method for solving <i>p</i>-order cone complementarity problem.

We study analytic properties of harmonic maps from Riemannian polyhedra into CAT(κ) spaces for κ∈{0,1}. Locally, on each top-dimensional face of the domain, this amounts to studying harmonic maps from smooth domains into CAT(κ) spaces. We compute a target variation formula that captures the curvature bound in the target, and use it to prove an Lp Liouville-type theorem for harmonic maps from admissible polyhedra into convex CAT(κ) spaces. Another consequence we derive from the target variation formula is the Eells–Sampson Bochner formula for CAT(1) targets.
