The purpose of this paper is to investigate the problem of finding a common element of the set of fixed points <i>F</i>(<i>S</i>) of a nonexpansive mapping <i>S</i> and the set of solutions _<i>A</i> of the variational inequality for a monotone, Lipschitz continuous mapping <i>A</i>. We introduce a hybrid extragradient-like approximation method which is based on the well-known extragradient method and a hybrid (or outer approximation) method. The method produces three sequences which are shown to converge strongly to the same common element of {F(S)\cap\Omega_{A}}. As applications, the method provides an algorithm for finding the common fixed point of a nonexpansive mapping and a pseudocontractive mapping, or a common zero of a monotone Lipschitz continuous mapping and a maximal monotone mapping.

A classical set of birational invariants of a variety are its spaces of pluricanonical forms and some of their canonically defined subspaces. Each of these vector spaces admits a typical metric structure which is also birationally invariant. These vector spaces so metrized will be referred to as the pseudonormed spaces of the original varieties. A fundamental question is the following: Given two mildly singular projective varieties with some of the first variety9s pseudonormed spaces being isometric to the corresponding ones of the second variety9s, can one construct a birational map between them that induces these isometries? In this work, a positive answer to this question is given for varieties of general type. This can be thought of as a theorem of Torelli type for birational equivalence.

Surface segmentation is a fundamental problem in computer graphics. It has various applications such as metamorphosis, surface matching, surface compression, 3D shape retrieval, texture mapping, etc. All orientable surfaces are Riemann surfaces, and admit conformal structures. This paper introduces a novel surface segmentation algorithm based on its conformal structure. Each segment can be conformally mapped to a planar rectangle, and the transition maps are planar translations. The segmentation is intrinsic to the surface, independent of the embedding, and consistent for surfaces with similar geometries. By using segmentation based on conformal structure, the mapping between surfaces with arbitrary topologies can be constructed explicitly. The method is rigorous, efficient and automatic. Given a bounded Euclidean domain Ω, we consider the sequence of optimisers of the k-th Laplacian eigenvalue within the family consisting of all possible disjoint unions of scaled copies of Ω with fixed total volume. We show that this sequence encodes information yielding conditions for Ω to satisfy Pólya’s conjecture with either Dirichlet or Neumann boundary conditions. This is an extension of a result by Colbois and El Soufi which applies only to the case where the family of domains consists of all bounded domains. Furthermore, we fully classify the different possible behaviours for such sequences, depending on whether Pólya’s conjecture holds for a given specific domain or not. This approach allows us to recover a stronger version of Pólya’s original results for tiling domains satisfying some dynamical billiard conditions, and a strenghtening of Urakawa’s bound in terms of packing density.
