We consider diffusivity of random walks with transition probabilities depending on the number of consecutive traversals of the last traversed edge, the so called senile reinforced random walk (SeRW). In one dimension, the walk is known to be sub-diffusive with identity reinforcement function. We perturb the model by introducing a small probability \delta of escaping the last traversed edge at each step. The perturbed SeRW model is diffusive for any \delta , with enhanced diffusivity (\delta ) in the small \delta regime. We further study stochastically perturbed SeRW models by having the last edge escape probability of the form \delta with \delta 's being independent random variables. Enhanced diffusivity in such models are logarithmically close to the so called residual diffusivity (positive in the zero \delta limit), with diffusivity between \delta and \delta . Finally, we generalize our results to higher dimensions where the unperturbed model is already diffusive. The enhanced diffusivity can be as much as \delta .

We prove that classical solution of the spatially inhomogeneous and angular non-cutoff Boltzmann equation is C with respect to all variables, locally in the space and time variables. The proof relies on a generalized uncertainty principle, some improved upper bound and coercivity estimates on the nonlinear collision operator, and some subtle analysis on the commutators between the collision operators and some appropriately chosen pseudo-differential operators. We find sufficient conditions for the construction of vertex algebraic intertwining operators, among generalized Verma modules for an affine Lie algebra g^, from g-module homomorphisms. When g=sl_2, these results extend previous joint work with J. Yang, but the method used here is different. Here, we construct intertwining operators by solving Knizhnik-Zamolodchikov equations for three-point correlation functions associated to g^, and we identify obstructions to the construction arising from the possible non-existence of series solutions having a prescribed form.

We perform a numerical study of the heat transfer and flow structure of Rayleigh-Benard (RB) convection in (in most cases regular) porous media, which are comprised of circular, solid obstacles located on a square lattice. This study is focused on the role of porosity in the flow properties during the transition process from the traditional RB convection with (so no obstacles included) to Darcy-type porous-media convection with approaching 0. Simulations are carried out in a cell with unity aspect ratio, for Rayleigh number from to and varying porosities , at a fixed Prandtl number , and we restrict ourselves to the two-dimensional case. For fixed , the Nusselt number is found to vary non-monotonically as a function of ; namely, with decreasing , it first increases, before it decreases for approaching 0. The non-monotonic behaviour of originates from two competing effects of the porous structure on the heat transfer. On the one hand, the flow coherence is enhanced in the porous media, which is beneficial for the heat transfer. On the other hand, the convection is slowed down by the enhanced resistance due to the porous structure, leading to heat transfer reduction. For fixed , depending on , two different heat transfer regimes are identified, with different effective power-law behaviours of versus , namely a steep one for low when viscosity dominates, and the standard classical one for large . The scaling crossover occurs when the thermal boundary layer thickness and the pore scale are comparable. The influences of the porous structure on the temperature and velocity fluctuations, convective heat flux and energy dissipation rates are analysed, further demonstrating the competing effects of the porous structure to enhance or reduce the heat transfer.

We show that the Virasoro conjecture in Gromov–Witten theory holds for the the total space of a toric bundle E → B if and only if it holds for the base B. The main steps are: (i) we establish a localization formula that expresses Gromov–Witten invariants of E, equivariant with respect to the fiberwise torus action, in terms of genus-zero invariants of the toric fiber and all-genus invariants of B; and (ii) we pass to the non- equivariant limit in this formula, using Brown’s mirror theorem for toric bundles.
