In this paper, we propose a new type of weighted essentially non-oscillatory (WENO) limiter, which belongs to the class of Hermite WENO (HWENO) limiters, for the Runge-Kutta discontinuous Galerkin (RKDG) methods solving hyperbolic conservation laws. This new HWENO limiter is a modification of the simple WENO limiter proposed recently by Zhong and Shu. Both limiters use information of the DG solutions only from the target cell and its immediate neighboring cells, thus maintaining the original compactness of the DG scheme. The goal of both limiters is to obtain high order accuracy and non-oscillatory properties simultaneously. The main novelty of the new HWENO limiter in this paper is to reconstruct the polynomial on the target cell in a least square fashion while the simple WENO limiter is to use the entire polynomial of the original DG solutions in the neighboring cells with an addition of a constant for conservation. The modification in this paper improves the robustness in the computation of problems with strong shocks or contact discontinuities, without changing the compact stencil of the DG scheme. Numerical results for both one and two dimensional equations including Euler equations of compressible gas dynamics are provided to illustrate the viability of this modified limiter.

The main purpose of this paper is to analyze the stability and error estimates of the local discontinuous Galerkin (LDG) methods coupled with implicit-explicit (IMEX) time discretization schemes, for solving multi-dimensional convection-diffusion equations with nonlinear convection. By establishing the important relationship between the gradient and the interface jump of the numerical solution with the independent numerical solution of the gradient in the LDG method, on both rectangular and triangular elements, we can obtain the same stability results as in the one-dimensional case, i.e, the IMEX LDG schemes are unconditionally stable for the multi-dimensional convection-diffusion problems, in the sense that the time-step $\dt$ is only required to be upper-bounded by a positive constant independent of the spatial mesh size $h$. Furthermore, by the aid of the so-called elliptic projection and the adjoint argument, we can also obtain optimal error estimates in both space and time, for the corresponding fully discrete IMEX LDG schemes, under the same condition, i.e, if piecewise polynomial of degree $k$ is adopted on either rectangular or triangular meshes, we can show the convergence accuracy is of order $\Ocal(h^{k+1}+\dt^s)$ for the $s$-th order IMEX LDG scheme ($s=1,2,3$) under consideration. Numerical experiments are also given to verify our main results.

In this paper, we consider linear stability issues for one-dimensional hyperbolic conservation laws using a class of conservative high order upwind-biased finite difference schemes, which is a prototype for the weighted essentially non-oscillatory (WENO) schemes, for initial-boundary value problems (IBVP). The inflow boundary is treated by the so-called inverse Lax-Wendroff (ILW) or simplified inverse Lax-Wendroff (SILW) procedure, and the outflow boundary is treated by the classical high order extrapolation. A third order total variation diminishing (TVD) Runge-Kutta time discretization is used in the fully discrete case. Both GKS (Gustafsson, Kreiss and Sundstr\"om) and eigenvalue analysis are performed for both semi-discrete and fully discrete schemes. The two different analysis techniques yield consistent results. Numerical tests are performed to demonstrate the stability results predicted by the analysis.

Fixed-point iterative sweeping methods were developed in the literature to efficiently solve static Hamilton-Jacobi equations. This class of methods utilizes the Gauss-Seidel iterations and alternating sweeping strategy to achieve fast convergence rate. They take advantage of the properties of hyperbolic partial differential equations (PDEs) and try to cover a family of characteristics of the corresponding Hamilton-Jacobi equation in a certain direction simultaneously in each sweeping order. Different from other fast sweeping methods, fixed-point iterative sweeping methods have the advantages such as that they have explicit forms and do {\it not} involve inverse operation of nonlinear local systems. In principle, it can be applied in solving very general equations using any monotone numerical fluxes and high order approximations easily. In this paper, based on the recently developed fifth order WENO schemes which improve the convergence of the classical WENO schemes by removing slight post-shock oscillations, we design fifth order fixed-point sweeping WENO methods for efficient computation of steady state solution of hyperbolic conservation laws. Especially, we show that although the methods do {\it not} have linear computational complexity, they converge to steady state solutions much faster than regular time-marching approach by stability improvement for high order schemes with a forward Euler time-marching.

In this paper, we develop a discontinuous Galerkin (DG) method to solve the ideal special relativistic hydrodynamics (RHD) and design a bound-preserving (BP) limiter for this scheme by extending the idea in (X. Zhang and C.-W. Shu, Journal of Computational Physics, 229 (2010), 8918-8934). For RHD, the density and pressure are positive and the velocity is bounded by the speed of light. One difficulty in numerically solving the RHD in its conservative form is that the failure of preserving these physical bounds will result in ill-posedness of the problem and blowup of the code, especially in extreme relativistic cases. The standard way in dealing with this difficulty is to add extra numerical dissipation, while in doing so there is no guarantee in maintaining the high order of accuracy. Our BP limiter has the following features. It can theoretically guarantee to preserve the physical bounds for the numerical solution and maintain its designed high order accuracy. The limiter is local to the cell and hence is very easy to implement. Moreover, it renders $L^1$-stability to the numerical scheme. Numerical experiments are performed to demonstrate the good performance of this bound-preserving DG scheme. Even though we only discuss the BP limiter for DG schemes, it can be applied to high order finite volume schemes, such as weighted essentially non-oscillatory (WENO) finite volume schemes as well.
