Askewing'method is shown to effectively reduce the order of bias of locally parametric estimators, and at the same time retain positivity properties. The technique involves first calculating the usual locally parametric approximation in the neighbourhood of a point x'that is a short distance from the place x where the we wish to estimate the density, and then evaluating this approximation at x. By way of comparison, the usual locally parametric approach takes x'= x. In our construction, x'-x depends in a very simple way on the bandwidth and the kernel, and not at all on the unknown density. Using skewing in this simple form reduces the order of bias from the square to the cube of bandwidth; and taking the average of two estimators computed in this way further reduces bias, to the fourth power of bandwidth. On the other hand, variance increases only by at most a moderate constant factor.

It is known that the singularity in the non-cutoff cross-section of the Boltzmann equation leads to the gain of regularity and gain of weight in the velocity variable. By defining and analyzing a non-isotropy norm which precisely captures the dissipation in the linearized collision operator, we give a new and precise coercivity estimate for the non-cutoff Boltzmann equation for general physical cross sections.

We establish uniform error bounds of a finite difference method for the Klein-Gordon-Zakharov system (KGZ) with a dimensionless parameter ε∈(0,1], which is inversely proportional to the acoustic speed. In the subsonic limit regime, i.e. 0<ε≪1, the solution propagates highly oscillatory waves in time and/or rapid outgoing initial layers in space due to the singular perturbation in the Zakharov equation and/or the incompatibility of the initial data. Specifically, the solution propagates waves with O(ε)-wavelength in time and O(1)-wavelength in space as well as outgoing initial layers in space at speed O(1/ε). This high oscillation in time and rapid outgoing waves in space of the solution cause significant burdens in designing numerical methods and establishing error estimates for KGZ. By adapting an asymptotic consistent formulation, we propose a uniformly accurate finite difference method and rigorously establish two independent error bounds at O(h^2+τ^2/ε) and O(h^2+τ+ε) with h mesh size and τ time step. Thus we obtain a uniform error bound at O(h^2+τ) for 0<ε≤1. The main techniques in the analysis include the energy method, cut-off of the nonlinearity to bound the numerical solution, the integral approximation of the oscillatory term, and ε-dependent error bounds between the solutions of KGZ and its limiting model when ε→0+. Finally, numerical results are reported to confirm our error bounds.

We realize the moduli spaces of cubic fourfolds with specified group actions as arithmetic quotients of complex hyperbolic balls or type IV symmetric domains, and study their compactifications. We prove the geometric (GIT) compactifications are naturally isomorphic to the Hodge theoretic (Looijenga, in many cases Baily–Borel) compactifications. The key ingredients of the proof are the global Torelli theorem by Voisin, the characterization of the image of the period map given by Looijenga and Laza independently, and the functoriality of Looijenga compactifications proved in the Appendix.
