We analyze the transport properties of a set of symmetry-breaking extensions of the ChirikovTaylor Map. The spatial and temporal asymmetries result in the loss of periodicity in momentum direction in the phase space dynamics, enabling the asymmetric diffusion which is the origin of the unidirectional motion. The simplicity of the model makes the calculation of the global dynamical properties of the system feasible both in phase space and in controlling-parameter space. We present the results of numerical experiments which show the intricate dependence of the asymmetric diffusion to the controlling parameters.

Image matching is a fundamental problem in computer vision. One of the well-known techniques is SIFT (scale-invariant feature transform). SIFT searches for and extracts robust features in hierarchical image scale spaces for object identification. However it often lacks efficiency as it identifies many insignificant features such as tree leaves and grass tips in a natural building image. We introduce a content adaptive image matching approach by preprocessing the image with a color-entropy based segmentation and harmonic inpainting. Natural structures such as tree leaves have both high entropy and distinguished color, and so such a combined measure can be both discriminative and robust. The harmonic inpainting smoothly interpolates the image functions over the tree regions and so blurrs and reduces the features and their unnecessary matching there. We analyze spectrum of Laplacian supported by a periodic honeycomb lattice with generally unequal edge lengths and a <i></i> type coupling in the vertices. Such a quantum graph has nonempty point spectrum with compactly supported eigenfunctions provided all the edge lengths are commensurate. We derive conditions determining the continuous spectral component and show that existence of gaps may depend on number-theoretic properties of edge lengths ratios. The case when two of the three lengths coincide is discussed in detail.

We propose several modifications to the grid based particle method (GBPM) [21] for moving interface modeling. There are several nice features of the proposed algorithm. The new method can significantly improve the distribution of sampling particles on the evolving interface. Unlike the original GBPM where footpoints (sampling points) tend to cluster to each other, the sampling points in the new method tend to be better separated on the interface. Moreover, by replacing the grid-based discretization using the cell-based discretization, we naturally decompose the interface into segments so that we can easily approximate surface integrals. As a possible alternative to the local polynomial least square approximation, we also study a geometric basis for local reconstruction in the resampling step. It is shown that every non-compact hyperbolic manifold of finite volume has a finite cover admitting a geodesic ideal triangulation. Also, every hyperbolic manifold of finite volume with non-empty, totally geodesic boundary has a finite regular cover which has a geodesic partially truncated triangulation. The proofs use an extension of a result due to Long and Niblo concerning the separability of peripheral subgroups.
