We study the hypocoercivity property for some kinetic equations in the whole space and obtain the optimal convergence rates of solutions to the equilibrium state in some function spaces. The analysis relies on the basic energy method and the compensating function introduced by Kawashima to the classical Boltzmann equation and developed by Glassey and Strauss in the relativistic setting. It is also motivated by the recent work (Duan et al., 2008 [8]) on the Boltzmann equation by combining the spectrum analysis and energy method. The advantage of the method introduced in this paper is that it can be applied to some complicated system whose detailed spectrum is not known. In fact, only some estimates through the Fourier transform on the conservative transport operator and the dissipation of the linearized operator on the subspace orthogonal to the collision invariants are needed.

Recent technical advances lead to the coupling of PET and MRI scanners, enabling one to acquire functional and anatomical data simultaneously. In this paper, we propose a tight frame based PET-MRI joint reconstruction model via the joint sparsity of tight frame coefficients. In addition, a nonconvex balanced approach is adopted to take the different regularities of PET and MRI images into account. To solve the nonconvex and nonsmooth model, a proximal alternating minimization algorithm is proposed, and the global convergence is present based on the Kurdyka--Łojasiewicz property. Finally, the numerical experiments show that our proposed models achieve better performance over the existing PET-MRI joint reconstruction models.

We present a method for modifying the topology of a 3D model with user control. The heart of our method is a guided topology editing algorithm. Given a source model and a user-provided target shape, the algorithm modifies the source so that the resulting model is topologically consistent with the target. Our algorithm permits removing or adding various topological features (e.g., handles, cavities and islands) in a common framework and ensures that each topological change is made by minimal modification to the source model. To create the target shape, we have also designed a convenient 2D sketching interface for drawing 3D line skeletons. As demonstrated in a suite of examples, the use of sketching allows more accurate removal of topological artifacts than previous methods, and enables creative designs with specific topological goals.

This article provides a complete description of the differential Gerstenhaber algebras of all nilpotent complex structures on any real six-dimensional nilpotent algebra. As an application, we classify all pseudo-Khlerian complex structures on six-dimensional nilpotent algebras whose differential Gerstenhaber algebra is quasi-isomorphic to that of the symplectic structure. In a weak sense of mirror symmetry, this gives a classication of pseudo-Khler structures on six-dimensional nilpotent algebras whose mirror images are themselves.

It is proved that the volume of spherical or hyperbolic simplices, when considered as a function of the dihedral angles, can be extended continuously to degenerated simplices. This verifies affirmatively a conjecture of John Minor.
