In contrast to the generalized FischerBurmeister function that is a natural extension of the popular FischerBurmeister function NCP-function, the generalized natural residual NCP-function based on discrete extension, recently proposed by Chen, Ko, and Wu, does not possess symmetric graph. In this paper we symmetrize the generalized natural residual NCP-function, and construct not only new NCP-functions and merit functions for the nonlinear complementarity problem, but also provide parallel functions to the generalized FischerBurmeister function.

Computational conformal geometry focuses on developing the computational methodologies on discrete surfaces to discover conformal geometric invariants. In this work, we briefly summarize the recent developments for methods and related applications in computational conformal geometry. There are two major approaches, holomorphic differentials and curvature flow. The holomorphic differential method is a linear method, which is more efficient and robust to triangulations with lower quality. The curvature flow method is nonlinear and requires higher quality triangulations, but more flexible. The conformal geometric methods have been broadly applied in many engineering fields, such as computer graphics, vision, geometric modeling and medical imaging. This paper is concerned with the time-asymptotic behavior toward strong rarefaction waves of solutions to one-dimensional compressible Navier--Stokes equations. Assume that the corresponding Riemann problem to the compressible Euler equations can be solved by rarefaction waves (<i>V^R</i>, <i>U^R</i>, <i>S^R</i>)(<i>t</i>,<i>x</i>). If the initial data (<i>v</i>₀ , <i>u</i>₀ ,<i>s</i>₀ )(<i>x</i>) to the nonisentropic compressible Navier--Stokes equations is a small perturbation of an approximate rarefaction wave constructed as in [S. Kawashima, A. Matsumura, and K. Nishihara, <i>Proc. Japan Acad. Ser. A</i>, 62 (1986), pp. 249--252], then we show that, for the general gas, the Cauchy problem admits a unique global smooth solution (<i>v</i>, <i>u</i>, <i>s</i>)(<i>t</i>,<i>x</i>) which tends to (<i>V^R</i>, <i>U^R</i>, <i>S^R</i>)(<i>t</i>,<i>x</i>) as <i>t</i> tends to infinity.
