Can you capture the motion of a smile in 3-D? This paper presents a video acquisition system that measures 3-D geometry accurately. The data acquisition speed is 90 fps and over one quarter million points per frame. Acquisition, reconstruction, and display are simultaneously realized at 30 fps.

We consider the Laplacian in a straight planar strip with Dirichlet boundary which has two Neumann'windows' of the same length, the centres of which are 2l apart, and study the asymptotic behaviour of the discrete spectrum as l. It is shown that there are pairs of eigenvalues around each isolated eigenvalue of a single-window strip and their distances vanish exponentially in the limit l. We derive an asymptotic expansion also in the case where a single window gives rise to a threshold resonance which the presence of the other window turns into a single isolated eigenvalue.

We study a free quantum motion on periodically structured manifolds composed of elementary two-dimensional'cells' connected either by linear segments or through points where the two cells touch. The general theory is illustrated with numerous examples in which the elementary components are spherical surfaces arranged into chains in a straight or zigzag way, or two-dimensional square lattice'carpets'. We show that the spectra of such systems have an infinite number of gaps and that the latter dominate the spectrum at high energies.

We consider a family \{\mathcal {H}^arepsilon\} _ {arepsilon> 0} of \{\mathcal {H}^arepsilon\} _ {arepsilon> 0} -periodic Schrdinger operators with \{\mathcal {H}^arepsilon\} _ {arepsilon> 0} -interactions supported on a lattice of closed compact surfaces; within a minimal period cell one has \{\mathcal {H}^arepsilon\} _ {arepsilon> 0} surfaces. We show that in the limit when \{\mathcal {H}^arepsilon\} _ {arepsilon> 0} and the interactions strengths are appropriately scaled, \{\mathcal {H}^arepsilon\} _ {arepsilon> 0} has at most \{\mathcal {H}^arepsilon\} _ {arepsilon> 0} gaps within finite intervals, and moreover, the limiting behavior of the first \{\mathcal {H}^arepsilon\} _ {arepsilon> 0} gaps can be completely controlled through a suitable choice of those surfaces and of the interactions strengths.

We consider rectangular graph superlattices of sides l 1, l 2 with the wave-function coupling at the junctions either of the type, when they are continuous and the sum of their derivatives is proportional to the common value at the junction with a coupling constant , or the s type with the roles of functions and derivatives reversed; the latter corresponds to the situations where the junctions are realized by complicated geometric scatterers. We show that the band spectra have a hidden fractal structure with respect to the ratio := l 1/l 2. If the latter is an irrational badly approximable by rationals, lattices have no gaps in the weak-coupling case. We show that there is a quantization for the asymptotic critical values of at which new gap series open, and explain it in terms of number-theoretic properties of .
