The Boltzmann equation which describes the time evolution of a large number of particles through the binary collision in statistics physics has close relation to the systems of fluid dynamics, that is, Euler equations and NavierStokes equations. As for a basic wave pattern to Euler equations, we consider the nonlinear stability of contact discontinuities to the Boltzmann equation. Even though the stability of the other two nonlinear waves, i.e., shocks and rarefaction waves has been extensively studied, there are few stability results on the contact discontinuity because unlike shock waves and rarefaction waves, its derivative has no definite sign, and decays slower than a rarefaction wave. Moreover, it behaves like a linear wave in a nonlinear setting so that its coupling with other nonlinear waves reveals a complicated interaction mechanism. We derive macroscopic dynamics for self-propelled particles in a fluid. The starting point is a coupled Vicsek–Stokes system. The Vicsek model describes self-propelled agents interacting through alignment. It provides a phenomenological description of hydrodynamic interactions between agents at high density. Stokes equations describe a low Reynolds number fluid. These two dynamics are coupled by the interaction between the agents and the fluid. The fluid contributes to rotating the particles through Jeffery’s equation. Particle self-propulsion induces a force dipole on the fluid. After coarse-graining we obtain a coupled Self-Organised Hydrodynamics–Stokes system. We perform a linear stability analysis for this system which shows that both pullers and pushers have unstable modes. We conclude by providing extensions of the Vicsek–Stokes model including short-distance repulsion, finite particle inertia and finite Reynolds number fluid regime.

When h is known and p is \tilde{q}-smooth, vanishing outside a compact in R^d, plug-in upper bounds are provided for the L2-error rate of \hat{p}_n and its [s]-th mixed partial derivative \hat{p}^{(s)}_n, via ∥f_{\hat{p}_n}−f_p∥_1, with rates (log a^{−1}_n)^{−N_1} and a^{N_2}_n, respectively, for h super-smooth and smooth; \tilde{q}∈R^+, [s] ≤ \tilde{q}, d≥1, N_1>0, N_2>0. For a_n ∼ (logn)^ζ⋅(n^{−δ}), the former rate is optimal for any δ>0 and the latter misses the optimal by the factor (logn)^ξ when δ=.5; ζ>0, ξ>0. N_1 and N_2 appear in optimal rates and lower error and risk bounds in the deconvolution literature.
