A familiar anomaly affects SU(2) gauge theory in four dimensions: a theory with an odd number of fermion multiplets in the spin 1/2 representation of the gauge group, and more generally in representations of spin 2r+1/2, is inconsistent. We describe here a more subtle anomaly that can affect SU(2) gauge theory in four dimensions under the condition that fermions transform with half-integer spin under SU(2) and bosons with integer spin. Such a theory, formulated in a way that requires no choice of spin structure, and with an odd number of fermion multiplets in representations of spin 4r+3/2, is inconsistent. The theory is consistent if one picks a spin or spin_c structure. Under Higgsing to U(1), the new SU(2) anomaly reduces to a known anomaly of "all-fermion electrodynamics." Like that theory, an SU(2) theory with an odd number of fermion multiplets in representations of spin 4r+3/2 can provide a boundary state for a five-dimensional gapped theory whose partition function on a closed five-manifold Y is (−1)^{∫_Y w2w3}. All statements have analogs with SU(2) replaced by Sp(2N). There is also an analog in five dimensions.

The aim of the book is to give an accessible introduction of mathematical models and signal processing methods in speech and hearing sciences for senior undergraduate and beginning graduate students with basic knowledge of linear algebra, differential equations, numerical analysis, and probability. Speech and hearing sciences are fundamental to numerous technological advances of the digital world in the past decade, from music compression in MP3 to digital hearing aids, from network based voice enabled services to speech interaction with mobile phones. Mathematics and computation are intimately related to these leaps and bounds. On the other hand, speech and hearing are strongly interdisciplinary areas where dissimilar scientific and engineering publications and approaches often coexist and make it difficult for newcomers to enter.

The positivity-preserving property is an important and challenging issue for the numerical solution of radiative transfer equations. In the past few decades, different numerical techniques have been proposed to guarantee positivity of the radiative intensity in several schemes, however it is difficult to maintain both high order accuracy and positivity. The discontinuous Galerkin (DG) finite element method is a high order numerical method which is widely used to solve the neutron/photon transfer equations, due to its distinguished advantages such as high order accuracy, geometric flexibility, suitability for $h$- and $p$-adaptivity, parallel efficiency, and a good theoretical foundation for stability and error estimates. In this paper, we construct arbitrarily high order accurate DG schemes which preserve positivity of the radiative intensity in the simulation of both steady and unsteady radiative transfer equations in one- and two-dimensional geometry by using a combined technique of the scaling positivity-preserving limiter in \cite{ZS2} and a new rotational positivity-preserving limiter. This combined limiter is simple to implement and we prove the properties of positivity-preserving and high order accuracy rigorously. One- and two-dimensional numerical results are provided to verify the good properties of the positivity-preserving DG schemes.

In the present paper we prove that Hall polynomial exists for each triple of decomposition sequences which parameterize isomorphism classes of coherent sheaves of a domestic weighted projective line $\mathbb X$ over finite fields. These polynomials are then used to define the generic Ringel--Hall algebra of $\mathbb X$ as well as its Drinfeld double. Combining this construction with a result of Cramer, we show that Hall polynomials exist for tame quivers, which not only refines a result of Hubery, but also confirms a conjecture of Berenstein and Greenstein.

Motivated by Gutkin curves arising in capillary floating and billiard ball problem, we introduce a new projection function for convex plane curves, and study the curves when the defined projection function is constant. These curves can be regarded as a generalization of curves with constant width. We give a necessary and sufficient condition for the existence of such curves, and provide an explicit expression for the radius of curvature. Properties of our curves and their relation to Gutkin curves are also discussed. Finally, we construct and exhibit some curves with constant projection function.
