In this paper, we present an efficient \GQR\ algorithm for solving the linear response eigenvalue problem $\scrH\bx ={\lambda}\bx $, where $\scrH$ is $\bPi^-$-symmetric with respect to $\Gamma_0 = \diag(I_n,-I_n)$. Based on newly introduced $\Gamma$-orthogonal transformations, the \GQR\ algorithm preserves the $\bPi^-$-symmetric structure of $\scrH$ throughout the whole process, which guarantees the computed eigenvalues to appear pairwise $(\lambda,-\lambda)$ as they should. With the help of a newly established implicit $\Gamma$-orthogonality theorem, we incorporate the implicit multi-shift technique to accelerate the convergence of the \GQR\ algorithm. Numerical experiments are given to show the effectiveness of the algorithm.

The main purpose of this paper is to analyze the stability and error estimates of the local discontinuous Galerkin (LDG) methods coupled with carefully chosen implicit-explicit (IMEX) Runge-Kutta time discretization up to third order accuracy, for solving one-dimensional linear advection-diffusion equations. In the time discretization the advection term is treated explicitly and the diffusion term implicitly. There are three highlights of this work. The first is that we establish an important relationship between the gradient and interface jump of the numerical solution with the independent numerical solution of the gradient in the LDG methods. The second is that, by aid of the aforementioned relationship and the energy method, we show that the IMEX LDG schemes are unconditionally stable for the linear problems, in the sense that the time-step $\dt$ is only required to be upper-bounded by a constant which depends on the ratio of the diffusion and the square of the advection coefficients and is independent of the mesh-size $h$, even though the advection term is treated explicitly. The last is that under this time step condition, we obtain optimal error estimates in both space and time for the third order IMEX Runge-Kutta time-marching coupled with LDG spatial discretization. Numerical experiments are also given to verify the main results.

We present a general existence proof for a wide class of non-linear elliptic equations which can be applied to problems with barrier conditions without specifying any assumptions guaranteeing the uniqueness or local uniqueness of particular solutions. As an application we prove the existence of closed hypersurfaces with curvature prescribed in the tangent bundle of an ambient Riemannian manifold $N$ without supposing any sign condition on the sectional curvatures $K_N$. A curvature flow wouldn't work in this situation, neither the method of successive approximation.

We study Schrödinger operators with a one-frequency analytic potential, focusing on the transition between the two distinct local regimes characteristic respectively of large and small potentials. From the dynamical point of view, the transition signals the emergence of non-uniform hyperbolicity, so the dependence of the Lyapunov exponent with respect to parameters plays a central role in the analysis. Though often ill-behaved by conventional measures, we show that the Lyapunov exponent is in fact remarkably regular in a “stratified sense” which we define: the irregularity comes from the matching of nice (analytic or smooth) functions along sets with complicated geometry. This result allows us to establish that the “critical set” for the transition lies within countably many codimension one subvarieties of the (infinite-dimensional) parameter space. A more refined renormalization-based analysis shows that the critical set is rather thin within those subvarieties, and allows us to conclude that a typical potential has no critical energies. Such acritical potentials also form an open set and have several interesting properties: only finitely many “phase transitions” may happen, but never at any specific point in the spectrum, and the Lyapunov exponent is minorated in the region of the spectrum where it is positive. On the other hand, we do show that the number of phase transitions can be arbitrarily large.

Let M and N be two compact complex manifolds. We show that if the tautological line bundle O_{T^∗}M(1) is not pseudo-effective and O_{T^∗}N(1) is nef, then there is no non-constant holomorphic map from M to N. In particular, we prove that any holomorphic map from a compact complex manifold M with RC-positive tangent bundle to a compact complex manifold N with nef cotangent bundle must be a constant map. As an application, we obtain that there is no non-constant holomorphic map from a compact Hermitian manifold with positive holomorphic sectional curvature to a Hermitian manifold with non-positive holomorphic bisectional curvature.
