The aim of the present paper is to suggest that statistical physics provides the correct language to understand the practical behavior of the LLL algorithm, most of which are left unexplained to this day. To this end, we propose sandpile models that imitate LLL with compelling accuracy, and prove for these models some of the most desired statements regarding LLL. We also formulate a few conjectures that formally capture our heuristics and would serve as milestones for further development of the theory.

Extriangulated categories were introduced by Nakaoka and Palu by extracting the similarities between exact categories and triangulated categories. A notion of mutation of subcategories in an extriangulated category is defined in this article. Let $\cal A$ be an extension closed subcategory of an extriangulated category $\C$. Then the quotient category $\cal M:=\cal A/\X$ carries naturally a triangulated structure whenever $(\cal A,\cal A)$ forms an $\X$-mutation pair. This result unifies many previous constructions of triangulated quotient categories, and using it gives a classification of thick triangulated subcategories of pretriangulated category $\C/\X$, where $\X$ is functorially finite in $\C$. When $\C$ has Auslander-Reiten translation $\tau$, we prove that for a functorially finite subcategory $\X$ of $\C$ containing projectives and injectives, $\C/\X$ is a triangulated category if and only if $(\C,\C)$ is $\X-$mutation, and if and only if $\tau \underline{\X}=\overline{\X}.$ This generalizes a result by J{\o}rgensen who proved the equivalence between the first and the third conditions for triangulated categories. Furthermore, we show that for such a subcategory $\X$ of the extriangulated category $\C$, $\C$ admits a new extriangulated structure such that $\C$ is a Frobenius extriangulated category. Applications to exact categories and triangulated categories are given. From the applications we present examples that extriangulated categories are neither exact categories nor triangulated categories.\

We develop the affine sieve in the context of orbits of congruence subgroups of semisimple groups acting linearly on affine space. In particular, we give effective bounds for the saturation numbers for points on such orbits at which the value of a given polynomial has few prime factors. In many cases these bounds are of the same quality as what is known in the classical case of a polynomial in one variable where the orbit consists of the integers. When the orbit is the set of integral matrices of a fixed determinant, we obtain a sharp result for the saturation number, and thus establish the Zariski density of matrices all of whose entries are prime numbers. Among the key tools used are explicit approximations to the generalized Ramanujan conjectures for such groups, and sharp and uniform counting of points on such orbits when ordered by various norms.
