We study the super-resolution (SR) problem of recovering point sources consisting of a collection of isolated and suitably separated spikes from only the low frequency measurements. If the peak separation is above a factor in (1,2) of the Rayleigh length (physical resolution limit), L 1 minimization is guaranteed to recover such sparse signals. However, below such critical length scale, especially the Rayleigh length, the L 1 certificate no longer exists. We show several local properties (local minimum, directional stationarity, and sparsity) of the limit points of minimizing two L 1 based nonconvex penalties, the difference of L 1 and L 1 norms ( L 1 ) and capped L 1 (C L 1 ), subject to the measurement constraints. We study the front dynamics of solutions of the initial value problem of the Burgers equation with initial data being the viscous shock front plus the white noise perturbation. In the sense of distribution, the solutions propagate with the same speed as the unperturbed front, however, the front location is random and satisfies a central limit theorem with the variance proportional to the time<i>t</i>, as<i>t</i> goes to infinity. With probability arbitrarily close to one, the front width is<i>O</i>(1) for large time.

We consider a one-dimensional model biodegradation system consisting of two reactionadvection equations for nutrient and pollutant concentrations and a rate equation for biomass. The hydrodynamic dispersion is ignored. Under an explicit condition on the decay and growth rates of biomass, the system can be approximated by two component models by setting biomass kinetics to equilibrium. We derive closed form solutions for constant speed traveling fronts for the reduced two component models and compare their profiles in homogeneous media. For a spatially random velocity field, we introduce travel time and study statistics of degradation fronts via representations in terms of the travel time probability density function (<i>pdf</i>) and the traveling front profiles. A time domain blind source separation algorithm of convolutive sound mixtures is studied based on a compact partial inversion formula in closed form. An L1-constrained minimization problem is formulated to find demixing filter coefficients for source separation while capturing scaling invariance and sparseness of solutions. The minimization aims to reduce (lagged) cross correlations of the mixture signals, which are modeled stochastically. The problem is non-convex, however it is put in a nonlinear least squares form where the robust and convergent Levenberg-Marquardt iterative method is applicable to compute local minimizers. Efficiency is achieved in recovering lower dimensional demixing filter solutions than the physical ones. Computations on recorded and synthetic mixtures show satisfactory performance, and are compared with other iterative methods.

A nonlinear, nonlocal cochlear model of the transmission line type is studied in order to capture the multitone interactions and resulting tonal suppression effects. The model can serve as a module for voice signal processing, and is a one-dimensional (in space) damped dispersive nonlinear PDE based on the mechanics and phenomenology of hearing. It describes the motion of the basilar membrane (BM0 in the cochlea driven by input pressure waves. Both elastic dampling and selective longitudinal fluid damping are present. The forner is nonlinear and nonlocal in BM displacement, and plays a kep role in capturing tonal interactions. The latter is active only near the exit boundary (helicotrema), and is built in to damp out the remaining long waves.
