Inthisarticle,weprovideasufficientandnecessaryconditiononparabolic isometries of positive translation lengths on complete visibility CAT(0) spaces. One of the consequences is that each parabolic isometry of a complete simply connected visibility manifold of nonpositive sectional curvature has zero translation length. Applications on the geometry of open negatively curved manifolds will also be discussed.

We consider the Stokes conjecture concerning the shape of extreme 2-dimensional water waves. By new geometric methods including a non-linear frequency formula, we prove the Stokes conjecture in the original variables. Our results do not rely on structural assumptions needed in previous results such as isolated singularities, symmetry and monotonicity. Part of our results extends to the mathematical problem in higher dimensions.

We construct a moduli space of stable pairs over a smooth projective variety, parametrizing morphisms from a fixed coherent sheaf to a varying sheaf of fixed topological type, subject to a stability condition. This generalizes the notion used by Pandharipande and Thomas, following Le Potier, where the fixed sheaf is the structure sheaf of the variety. We then describe the relevant deformation and obstruction theories. We also show the existence of the virtual fundamental class in special cases.

Registration, which aims to find an optimal 1-1 correspondence between shapes, is an important process in different research areas. Landmark-based surface registration has been widely studied to obtain a mapping between shapes that matches important features. Obtaining a unique and bijective surface registration that matches features consistently is generally challenging, especially when a large number of landmark constraints are enforced. This motivates us to search for a unique landmark matching surface diffeomorphism, which minimizes the local geometric distortion. For this purpose, we propose a special class of diffeomorphisms called the Teichmüller mappings (T-Maps). Under suitable conditions on the landmark constraints, a unique T-Map between two surfaces can be obtained, which minimizes the maximal conformality distortion. The conformality distortion measures how far the mapping deviates from a conformal mapping, and hence it measures the local geometric distortion. In this paper, we propose an efficient iterative algorithm, called the quasi-conformal (QC) iteration, to compute the T-Map. The basic idea is to represent the set of diffeomorphisms using Beltrami coefficients (BCs) and look for an optimal BC associated to the desired T-Map. The associated diffeomorphism can be efficiently reconstructed from the optimal BC using the linear Beltrami solver (LBS). Using BCs to represent diffeomorphisms guarantees the diffeomorphic property of the registration, even with very large deformation. Using our proposed method, the T-Map can be accurately and efficiently computed. The obtained registration is guaranteed to be bijective. The proposed algorithm can also be extended to compute T-Map with soft landmark constraints. We applied the proposed algorithm to real applications, such as brain landmark matching registration, constrained texture mapping, and human face registration. Experimental results shows that our method is both effective and efficient in computing a nonoverlap landmark matching registration with the least amount of conformality distortion.

We formulate the Riemannian calculus of the probability set embedded with L^2-Wasserstein metric. This is an initial work of transport information geometry. Our investigation starts with the probability simplex (probability manifold) supported on vertices of a finite graph. The main idea is to embed the probability manifold as a submanifold of the positive measure space with a nonlinear metric tensor. Here the nonlinearity comes from the linear weighted Laplacian operator. By this viewpoint, we establish torsion-free Christoffel symbols, Levi-Civita connections, curvature tensors, and volume forms in the probability manifold by Euclidean coordinates. As a consequence, the Jacobi equation, Laplace-Beltrami and Hessian operators on the probability manifold are derived. These geometric computations are also provided in the infinite-dimensional density space (density manifold) supported on a finite-dimensional manifold. In particular, an identity is given connecting the Baker-{É}mery Γ2 operator (carr{é} du champ it{é}r{é}) by connecting Fisher-Rao information metric and optimal transport metric. Several examples are demonstrated.
