We use techniques from both real and complex algebraic geometry to study$K$-theoretic and related invariants of the algebra$C$($X$) of continuous complex-valued functions on a compact Hausdorff topological space$X$. For example, we prove a parameterized version of a theorem by Joseph Gubeladze; we show that if$M$is a countable, abelian, cancellative, torsion-free, semi-normal monoid, and$X$is contractible, then every finitely generated projective module over$C$($X$)[$M$] is free. The particular case $$ M = \mathbb{N}_0^n $$ gives a parameterized version of the celebrated theorem proved independently by Daniel Quillen and Andrei Suslin that finitely generated projective modules over a polynomial ring over a field are free. The conjecture of Jonathan Rosenberg which predicts the homotopy invariance of the negative algebraic$K$-theory of$C$($X$) follows from the particular case $$ M = {\mathbb{Z}^n} $$ . We also give algebraic conditions for a functor from commutative algebras to abelian groups to be homotopy invariant on$C$^{*}-algebras, and for a homology theory of commutative algebras to vanish on$C$^{*}-algebras. These criteria have numerous applications. For example, the vanishing criterion applied to nil$K$-theory implies that commutative$C$^{*}-algebras are$K$-regular. As another application, we show that the familiar formulas of Hochschild–Kostant–Rosenberg and Loday–Quillen for the algebraic Hochschild and cyclic homology of the coordinate ring of a smooth algebraic variety remain valid for the algebraic Hochschild and cyclic homology of$C$($X$). Applications to the conjectures of Beĭlinson-Soulé and Farrell–Jones are also given.

This volume presents selections of Peter J. Bickels major papers, along with comments on their novelty and impact on the subsequent development of statistics as a discipline. Each of the eight parts concerns a particular area of research and provides new commentary by experts in the area. The parts range from Rank-Based Nonparametrics to Function Estimation and Bootstrap Resampling. Peters amazing career encompasses the majority of statistical developments in the last half-century or about about half of the entire history of the systematic development of statistics. This volume shares insights on these exciting statistical developments with future generations of statisticians. The compilation of supporting material about Peters life and work help readers understand the environment under which his research was conducted. The material will also inspire readers in their own research-based pursuits. This volume includes new photos of Peter Bickel, his biography, publication list, and a list of his students. These give the reader a more complete picture of Peter Bickel as a teacher, a friend, a colleague, and a family man.

The deformation theory of hyperbolic and Euclidean cone-manifolds with all cone angles less than 2 plays an important role in many problems in low-dimensional topology and in the geometrization of 3-manifolds. Furthermore, various old conjectures dating back to Stoker about the moduli space of convex hyperbolic and Euclidean polyhedra can be reduced to the study of deformations of cone-manifolds by doubling a polyhedron across its faces. This deformation theory has been understood by Hodgson and Kerckhoff [7] when the singular set has no vertices, and by Weiß [32] when the cone angles are less than . We prove here an infinitesimal rigidity result valid for cone angles less than 2, stating that infinitesimal deformations which leave the dihedral angles fixed are trivial in the hyperbolic case, and reduce to some simple deformations in the Euclidean case. The method is to treat this as a problem concerning the deformation theory of singular Einstein metrics, and to apply analytic methods about elliptic operators on stratified spaces. This work is an important ingredient in the local deformation theory of cone-manifolds by the second author [22]; see also the concurrent work by Weiß [33].
