We construct a moduli space of stable pairs over a smooth projective variety, parametrizing morphisms from a fixed coherent sheaf to a varying sheaf of fixed topological type, subject to a stability condition. This generalizes the notion used by Pandharipande and Thomas, following Le Potier, where the fixed sheaf is the structure sheaf of the variety. We then describe the relevant deformation and obstruction theories. We also show the existence of the virtual fundamental class in special cases.

This paper is a follow-up of the work [Chen, J.-S.: J. Optimiz. Theory Appl., Submitted for publication (2004)] where an NCP-function and a descent method were proposed for the nonlinear complementarity problem. An unconstrained reformulation was formulated due to a merit function based on the proposed NCP-function. We continue to explore properties of the merit function in this paper. In particular, we show that the gradient of the merit function is globally Lipschitz continuous which is important from computational aspect. Moreover, we show that the merit function is <i>SC</i> ¹ function which means it is continuously differentiable and its gradient is semismooth. On the other hand, we provide an alternative proof, which uses the new properties of the merit function, for the convergence result of the descent method considered in [Chen, J.-S.: J. Optimiz. Theory Appl., Submitted for publication (2004)].

How to properly specify boundary conditions for pressure is a longstanding problem for the incompressible Navier–Stokes equations with no-slip boundary conditions. An analytical resolution of this issue stems from a recently developed formula for the pressure in terms of the commutator of the Laplacian and Leray projection operators. Here we make use of this formula to (a) improve the accuracy of computing pressure in two kinds of existing time-discrete projection methods implicit in viscosity only, and (b) devise new higher-order accurate time-discrete projection methods that extend a slip-correction idea behind the well-known finite-difference scheme of Kim and Moin. We test these schemes for stability and accuracy using various combinations of C0 finite elements. For all three kinds of time discretization, one can obtain third-order accuracy for both pressure and velocity without a time-step stability restriction of diffusive type. Furthermore, two kinds of projection methods are found stable using piecewise-linear elements for both velocity and pressure.

Siegel varieties are locally symmetric varieties. They are important and interesting in algebraic geometry and number theory. We construct a canonical Hodge bundle on a Siegel variety so that the holomorphic tangent bundle can be embedded into the Hodge bundle; we obtain that the canonical Bergman metric on a Siegel variety is same as the induced Hodge metric and we describe asymptotic behavior of this unique K\"ahler-Einstein metric explicitly; depending on these properties and the uniformitarian of K\"ahler-Einstein manifold, we study extensions of the tangent bundle over any smooth toroidal compactification. We apply these results of Hodge bundles, to study dimension of Siegel cusp modular forms and general type for Siegel varieties
