In this article, we classify all standard invariants that can arise from a composed inclusion of an A 3 with an A 4 subfactor. More precisely, if N P is an A 3 subfactor and P M is an A 4 subfactor, then only four standard invariants can arise from the composed inclusion N M. We answer a question posed by Bisch and Haagerup in 1994. The techniques of this paper also show that there are exactly four standard invariants for the composed inclusion of two A 4 subfactors.

Given a compact set of real numbers, a random $C^{m + \alpha}$ -diffeomorphism is constructed such that the image of any measure concentrated on the set and satisfying a certain condition involving a real number $s$ , almost surely has Fourier dimension greater than or equal to $s / (m + \alpha)$ . This is used to show that every Borel subset of the real numbers of Hausdorff dimension $s$ is $C^{m + \alpha}$ -equivalent to a set of Fourier dimension greater than or equal to $s / (m + \alpha )$ . In particular every Borel set is diffeomorphic to a Salem set, and the Fourier dimension is not invariant under $C^{m}$ -diffeomorphisms for any $m$ .

We consider singular integral operators of the form (a)$Z$_{1}L^{−1}Z_{2}, (b)$Z$_{1}Z_{2}L^{−1}, and (c)$L$^{−1}Z_{1}Z_{2}, where$Z$_{1}and$Z$_{2}are nonzero right-invariant vector fields, and$L$is the$L$^{2}-closure of a canonical Laplacian. The operators (a) are shown to be bounded on$L$^{p}for all$p$∈(1, ∞) and of weak type (1, 1), whereas all of the operators in (b) and (c) are not of weak type ($p, p$) for any$p$∈[1, ∞).
