In this paper, we consider the Cauchy problem to the heat conductive compressible Navier-Stokes equations in the presence of vacuum and with vacuum far field. Global well-posedness of strong solutions is established under the assumption, among some other regularity and compatibility conditions, that the scaling invariant quantity $\|\rho_0\|_\infty(\|\rho_0\|_3+\|\rho_0\|_\infty^2\|\sqrt{\rho_0}u_0\|_2^2)(\|\nabla u_0\|_2^2+ \|\rho_0\|_\infty\|\sqrt{\rho_0}E_0\|_2^2)$ is sufficiently small, with the smallness depending only on the parameters $R, \gamma, \mu, \lambda,$ and $\kappa$ in the system. Notably, the smallness assumption is imposed on the above scaling invariant quantity exclusively, and it is independent of any norms of the initial data, which is different from the existing papers, see, e.g., \cite{HLX12,HUANGLI11,WENZHU17}. The total mass can be either finite or infinite. A new equation for the density, more precisely for the cubic of the density, derived from combing the continuity and momentum equations, is employed to get the $L^\infty_t(L^3)$ type estimate of the density.

The numerical approximation of high-frequency wave propagation in inhomogeneous media is a challenging problem. In particular, computing high-frequency solutions by direct simulations requires several points per wavelength for stability and usually requires many points per wavelength for a satisfactory accuracy. In this paper, we propose a new method for the acoustic wave equation in inhomogeneous media in the time domain to achieve superior accuracy and stability without using a large number of unknowns. The method is based on a discontinuous Galerkin discretization together with carefully chosen basis functions. To obtain the basis functions, we use the idea from geometrical optics and construct the basis functions by using the leading order term in the asymptotic expansion. We establish a differential d 2 (D 1)= h 0 2 h 3 g 2 in the 51-stem of the Adams spectral sequence at the prime 2, which gives the first correct calculation of the stable 51 and 52 stems. This differential is remarkable since we know of no way to prove it without recourse to the motivic Adams spectral sequence. It is the last undetermined differential in the range of the first author's detailed calculations of the n-stems for n< 60 [6]. This note advertises the use of the motivic Adams spectral sequence to obtain information about classical stable homotopy groups.
