In this survey paper, we will present the recent work on the study of the compressible fluids with vacuum states by illustrating its interesting and singular behavior through some systems of fluid dynamics, that is, Euler equations, EulerPoisson equations and NavierStokes equations. The main concern is the well-posedness of the problem when vacuum presents and the singular behavior of the solution near the interface separating the vacuum and the gas. Furthermore, the relation of the solutions for the gas dynamics with vacuum to those of the Boltzmann equation will also be discussed. In fact, the results obtained so far for vacuum states are far from being complete and satisfactory. Therefore, this paper can only be served as an introduction to this interesting field which has many open and challenging mathematical problems. Finding surface mappings with least distortion arises from many applications in various fields. Extremal Teichmüller maps are surface mappings with least conformality distortion. The existence and uniqueness of the extremal Teichmüller map between Riemann surfaces of finite type are theoretically guaranteed (see Fletcher and Markovic, Quasiconformal maps and Teichmüller theory, Oxford Graduate Texts in Math., vol. 11, Oxford University Press, Oxford, 2007). Recently, a simple iterative algorithm for computing the Teichmüller maps between connected Riemann surfaces with given boundary value was proposed by Lui, Lam, Yau, and Gu in Teichmüller extremal mapping and its applications to landmark matching registration, arXiv:1211.2569. Numerical results were reported in the paper to show the effectiveness of the algorithm. The method was successfully applied to landmarkmatching registration. The purpose of this paper is to prove the iterative algorithm proposed in loc. cit., indeed converges.

In this paper, we investigate the space of certain weak stability conditions on the triangulated category of D0-D2-D6 bound states on a smooth projective Calabi-Yau 3-fold. In the case of a quintic 3-fold, the resulting space is interpreted as a universal covering space of an infinitesimal neighborhood of the conifold point in the stringy K¨ahler moduli space. We then associate the DT type invariants counting semistable objects, which give new curve counting invariants on Calabi-Yau 3-folds. We also investigate the wall-crossing formula of our invariants and their interplay with the Seidel-Thomas twist.

We explain how the classical notions of Fisher information of a random variable and Fisher information matrix of a random vector can be extended to a much broader setting. We also show that Stam’s inequality for Fisher information and Shannon entropy, as well as the more generalized versions proved earlier by the authors, are all special cases of more general sharp inequalities satisfied by random vectors. The extremal random vectors, which we call generalized Gaussians, contain Gaussians as a limiting case but are noteworthy because they are heavy- tailed.
