In this paper, we initiate the study of the instability of naked singularities without symmetries. In a series of papers, Christodoulou proved that naked singularities are not stable in the context of the spherically symmetric Einstein equations coupled with a massless scalar field. We study in this paper the next simplest case: a characteristic initial value problem of this coupled system with the initial data given on two intersecting null cones, the incoming one of which is assumed to be spherically symmetric and singular at its vertex, and the outgoing one of which has no symmetries. It is shown that, arbitrarily fixing the initial scalar field, the set of the initial conformal metrics on the outgoing null cone such that the maximal future development does not have any sequences of closed trapped surfaces approaching the singularity, is of first category in the whole space in which the shear tensors are continuous. Such a set can then be viewed as exceptional, although the exceptionality is weaker than the at least 1 co-dimensionality in spherical symmetry. Almost equivalently, it is also proved that, arbitrarily fixing an incoming null cone C––ε to the future of the initial incoming null cone, the set of the initial conformal metrics such that the maximal future development has at least one closed trapped surface before C––ε, contains an open and dense subset of the whole space. Since the initial scalar field can be chosen such that the singularity is naked if the initial shear is set to be zero, we may say that the spherical naked singularities of a self-gravitating scalar field are not stable under gravitational perturbations. This in particular gives new families of non-spherically symmetric gravitational perturbations different from the original spherically symmetric scalar perturbations given by Christodoulou.

Published in 1999, Christodoulou proved that the naked singularities of a self-gravitating scalar field are not stable in spherical symmetry and therefore the cosmic censorship conjecture is true in this context. The original proof is by contradiction and sharp estimates are obtained strictly depending on spherical symmetry. In this paper, appropriate a priori estimates for the solution are obtained. These estimates are more relaxed but sufficient for giving another robust argument in proving the instability, in particular not by contradiction. In a companion paper, we are able to prove certain instability theorems of the spherically symmetric naked singularities of a scalar field under gravitational perturbations without symmetries. The argument given in this paper plays a central role.

We consider a characteristic problem of the vacuum Einstein equations with part of the initial data given on a future asymptotically flat null cone, and show that the solution exists uniformly around the null cone for general such initial data. Therefore, the solution contains a piece of the future null infinity. The initial data are not required to be small and the decaying condition is consistent with those in the works of [8] and [11].

Parameterizations of manifolds are widely applied to the fields of numerical partial differential equations and computer graphics. To this end, in recent years several efficient and reliable numerical algorithms have been developed by different research groups for the computation of triangular and tetrahedral mesh parameterizations. However, it is still challenging when the topology of manifolds is nontrivial, e.g., the 3-manifold of a topological solid torus. In this paper, we propose a novel volumetric stretch energy minimization algorithm for volume-preserving parameterizations of toroidal polyhedra with a single boundary being mapped to a standard torus. In addition, the algorithm can also be used to compute the equiareal mapping between a genus-one closed surface and the standard torus. Numerical experiments indicate that the developed algorithm is effective and performs well on the bijectivity of the mapping. Applications on manifold registrations and partitions are demonstrated to show the robustness of our algorithms.

Surface parameterizations have been widely applied in the computer-aided design for the geometric processing tasks of surface registration, remeshing, texture mapping, and so on. In this paper, we present an efficient balanced energy minimization (BEM) algorithm for the computation of simply connected open surface parameterizations with balanced angle and area distortions. The existence of a nontrivial accumulation function of the BEM algorithm is guaranteed under some mild conditions and the limiting function is shown to be one-to-one. Comparisons of the BEM algorithm with the angle- and the area-preserving parameterizations show that the angular distortion is close to that of the angle-preserving parameterization while the area distortion is significantly improved. An application of the BEM on the Chinese virtual broadcasting technique is demonstrated thereafter, which is consisted of surface remeshing, registration, and morphing.
