In this paper we continue to advance the theory regarding the Riesz fractional gradient in the calculus of variations and fractional partial differential equations begun in an earlier work of the same name. In particular we here establish an L1 Hardy inequality, obtain further regularity results for solutions of certain fractional PDE, demonstrate the existence of minimizers for integral functionals of the fractional gradient with non-linear dependence in the field, and also establish the existence of solutions to corresponding Euler-Lagrange equations obtained as conditions of minimality. In addition we pose a number of open problems, the answers to which would fill in some gaps in the theory as well as to establish connections with more classical areas of study, including interpolation and the theory of Dirichlet forms.

For cable bridges, the cable tension force plays a crucial role in their construction, assessment and long-term structural health monitoring. Cable tension forces vary in real time with the change of the moving vehicle loads and environmental effects, and this continual variation in tension force may cause fatigue damage of a cable. Traditional vibration-based cable tension force estimation methods can only obtain the time-averaged cable tension force and not the instantaneous force. This paper proposes a new approach to identify the time-varying cable tension forces of bridges based on an adaptive sparse time-frequency analysis method. This is a recently developed method to estimate the instantaneous frequency by looking for the sparsest time-frequency representation of the signal within the largest possible time-frequency dictionary (i.e. set of expansion functions). In the proposed approach, first, the time-varying modal frequencies are identified from acceleration measurements on the cable, then, the time-varying cable tension is obtained from the relation between this force and the identified frequencies. By considering the integer ratios of the different modal frequencies to the fundamental frequency of the cable, the proposed algorithm is further improved to increase its robustness to measurement noise. A cable experiment is implemented to illustrate the validity of the proposed method. For comparison, the Hilbert–Huang transform is also employed to identify the time-varying frequencies, which are then used to calculate the time-varying cable-tension force. The results show that the adaptive sparse time-frequency analysis method produces more accurate estimates of the time-varying cable tension forces than the Hilbert–Huang transform method.

Full spectrum of a large sparse $\top$-palindromic quadratic eigenvalue problem ($\top$-PQEP) is considered arguably for the first time in this article. Such a problem is posed by calculation of surface Green's functions (SGFs) of mesoscopic transistors with a tremendous non-periodic cross-section. For this problem, general purpose eigensolvers are not efficient, nor is advisable to resort to the decimation method \etc to obtain the Wiener-Hopf factorization. After reviewing some rigorous understanding of SGF calculation from the perspective of $\top$-PQEP and nonlinear matrix equation, we present our new approach to this problem. In a nutshell, the unit disk where the spectrum of interest lies is broken down adaptively into pieces small enough that they each can be locally tackled by the generalized $\top$-skew-Hamiltonian implicitly restarted shift-and-invert Arnoldi (G$\top$SHIRA) algorithm with suitable shifts and other parameters, and the eigenvalues missed by this divide-and-conquer strategy can be recovered thanks to the accurate estimation provided by our newly developed scheme. Notably the novel non-equivalence deflation is proposed to avoid as much as possible duplication of nearby known eigenvalues when a new shift of G$\top$SHIRA is determined. We demonstrate our new approach by calculating the SGF of a realistic nanowire whose unit cell is described by a matrix of size $4000\times 4000$ at the density functional tight binding level, corresponding to a $8\times 8\; \mbox{nm}^{2}$ cross-section. We believe that quantum transport simulation of realistic nano-devices in the mesoscopic regime will greatly benefit from this work.

Let$S$be a closed Shimura variety uniformized by the complex$n$-ball associated with a standard unitary group. The Hodge conjecture predicts that every Hodge class in $${H^{2k} (S, \mathbb{Q})}$$ , $${k=0,\dots, n}$$ , is algebraic. We show that this holds for all degrees$k$away from the neighborhood $${\bigl]\tfrac13n,\tfrac23n\bigr[}$$ of the middle degree. We also prove the Tate conjecture for the same degrees as the Hodge conjecture and the generalized form of the Hodge conjecture in degrees away from an interval (depending on the codimension$c$of the subvariety) centered at the middle dimension of S. These results are derived from a general theorem that applies to all Shimura varieties associated with standard unitary groups of any signature. The proofs make use of Arthur’s endoscopic classification of automorphic representations of classical groups. As such our results rely on the stabilization of the trace formula for the (disconnected) groups $${GL (N) \rtimes \langle \theta \rangle}$$ associated with base change.

In this paper, we study the asymptotic behavior of positive solutions of fractional Hardy-Henon equation with an isolated singularity at the origin. We give a classification of isolated singularities of positive solutions near x = 0. Further, we prove the asymptotic behavior of positive singular solutions. These results parallel those known for the Laplacian counterpart proved by Caffarelli, Gidas and Spruck (Caffarelli, Gidas and Spruck in Comm Pure Appl Math, 1981, 1989), but the technique is very different, since the ODEs analysis is a missing ingredient in the fractional case. Our proofs are based on a monotonicity formula, combined with a blow up (down) argument, the Kelvin transformation and uniqueness of solutions of related degenerate equations on semi spherical surface. We also investigate isolated singularities located at infinity of fractional Hardy-Henon equation.
