Calculation of band structure of three dimensional photonic crystals amounts to solving large-scale Maxwell eigenvalue problems, which are notoriously challenging due to high multiplicity of zero eigenvalue. In this paper, we try to address this problem in such a broad context that band structure of three dimensional isotropic photonic crystals with all 14 Bravais lattices can be efficiently computed in a unified framework. We uncover the delicate machinery behind several key results of our work and on the basis of this new understanding we drastically simplify the derivations, proofs and arguments in our framework. In this work particular effort is made on reformulating the Bloch boundary condition for all 14 Bravais lattices in the redefined orthogonal coordinate system, and establishing eigen-decomposition of discrete partial derivative operators by systematic use of commutativity among them, which has been overlooked previously, and reducing eigen-decomposition of double-curl operator to the canonical form of a 3x3 complex skew-symmetric matrix under unitary congruence. With the validity of the novel nullspace free method in the broad context, we perform some calculations on one benchmark system to demonstrate the accuracy and efficiency of our algorithm.

The geometric Cauchy problem for a class of surfaces in a pseudo-Riemannian manifold of dimension 3 is to nd the surface which contains a given curve with a prescribed tangent bundle along the curve. We consider this problem for constant negative Gauss curvature surfaces (pseudospherical surfaces) in Euclidean 3-space, and for timelike constant non-zero mean curvature (CMC) surfaces in the Lorentz-Minkowski 3-space. We prove that there is a unique solution if the prescribed curve is noncharacteristic, and for characteristic initial curves (asymptotic curves for pseudospherical surfaces and null curves for timelike CMC) it is necessary and sucient for similar data to be prescribed along an additional characteristic curve that intersects the rst. The proofs also give a means of constructing all solutions using loop group techniques. The method used is the innite dimensional d'Alembert type representation for surfaces associated with Lorentzian harmonic maps (1-1 wave maps) into symmetric spaces, developed since the 1990's. Explicit formulae for the potentials in terms of the prescribed data are given, and some applications are considered.

The main purpose of this paper is to analyze the stability and error estimates of the local discontinuous Galerkin (LDG) methods coupled with implicit-explicit (IMEX) time discretization schemes, for solving multi-dimensional convection-diffusion equations with nonlinear convection. By establishing the important relationship between the gradient and the interface jump of the numerical solution with the independent numerical solution of the gradient in the LDG method, on both rectangular and triangular elements, we can obtain the same stability results as in the one-dimensional case, i.e, the IMEX LDG schemes are unconditionally stable for the multi-dimensional convection-diffusion problems, in the sense that the time-step $\dt$ is only required to be upper-bounded by a positive constant independent of the spatial mesh size $h$. Furthermore, by the aid of the so-called elliptic projection and the adjoint argument, we can also obtain optimal error estimates in both space and time, for the corresponding fully discrete IMEX LDG schemes, under the same condition, i.e, if piecewise polynomial of degree $k$ is adopted on either rectangular or triangular meshes, we can show the convergence accuracy is of order $\Ocal(h^{k+1}+\dt^s)$ for the $s$-th order IMEX LDG scheme ($s=1,2,3$) under consideration. Numerical experiments are also given to verify our main results.

We extend recent existence results for compact constant mean curvature normal geodesic graphs with boundary in space forms in a unified way to a large class of ambient spaces. That extension is achieved by solving a constant mean curvature existence problem in a general setting presented in two isometrically equivalent versions.
