The main idea of this paper is to clarify why it is sometimes incorrect to interpolate inequalities in a “formal” way. For this we consider two Hardy type inequalities, which are true for each parameter α≠0 but which fail for the “critical” point α=0. This means that we cannot interpolate these inequalities between the noncritical points α=1 and α=−1 and conclude that it is also true at the critical point α=0. Why? An accurate analysis shows that this problem is connected with the investigation of the interpolation of intersections ($N$∩$L$_{p}(w_{0}), N∩L_{p}(w_{1})), where$N$is the linear space which consists of all functions with the integral equal to 0. We calculate the$K$-functional for the couple ($N$∩$L$_{p}(w_{0}),$N$∩$L$_{p}(w_{1})), which turns out to be essentially different from the$K$-functional for ($L$_{p}(w_{0}), L_{p}(w_{1})), even for the case when$N$∩$L$_{p}(w_{i}) is dense in$L$_{p}(w_{i}) ($i$=0,1). This essential difference is the reason why the “naive” interpolation above gives an incorrect result.

We consider densities $D_\Sigma(A)$, $\overline{D}_\Sigma(A)$ and $\underline{D}_\Sigma(A)$ for a subset $A$ of $\mathbb{N}$ with respect to a sequence $\Sigma$ of finite subsets of $\mathbb{N}$ and study Fourier coefficients of ergodic, weakly mixing and strongly mixing $\times p$-invariant measures on the unit circle $\mathbb{T}$. Combining these, we prove the following measure rigidity results: on $\mathbb{T}$, the Lebesgue measure is the only non-atomic $\times p$-invariant measure satisfying one of the following: (1) $\mu$ is ergodic and there exist a F\o lner sequence $\Sigma$ in $\mathbb{N}$ and a nonzero integer $l$ such that $\mu$ is $\times (p^j+l)$-invariant for all $j$ in a subset $A$ of $\mathbb{N}$ with $D_\Sigma(A)=1$; (2) $\mu$ is weakly mixing and there exist a F\o lner sequence $\Sigma$ in $\mathbb{N}$ and a nonzero integer $l$ such that $\mu$ is $\times (p^j+l)$-invariant for all $j$ in a subset $A$ of $\mathbb{N}$ with $\overline{D}_\Sigma(A)>0$; (3) $\mu$ is strongly mixing and there exists a nonzero integer $l$ such that $\mu$ is $\times (p^j+l)$-invariant for infinitely many $j$. Moreover, a $\times p$-invariant measure satisfying (2) or (3) is either a Dirac measure or the Lebesgue measure. As an application we prove that for every increasing function $\tau$ defined on positive integers with $\lim_{n\to\infty}\tau(n)=\infty$, there exists a multiplicative semigroup $S_\tau$ of $\mathbb{Z}^+$ containing $p$ such that $|S_\tau\cap[1,n]|\leq (\log_p n)^{\tau(n)}$ and the Lebesgue measure is the only non-atomic ergodic $\times p$-invariant measure which is $\times q$-invariant for all $q$ in $S_\tau$.

Genome comparison is a vital research area of bioinformatics. For large-scale genome comparisons, the Multiple Sequence Alignment (MSA) methods have been impractical to use due to its algorithmic complexity. In this study, we propose a novel alignment-free method based on the one-to-one correspondence between a DNA sequence and its complete central moment vector of the cumulative Fourier power and phase spectra. In addition, the covariance between the four nucleotides in the power and phase spectra is included. We use the cumulative Fourier power and phase spectra to define a 28-dimensional vector for each DNA sequence. Euclidean distances between the vectors can measure the dissimilarity between DNA sequences. We perform testing with datasets of different sizes and types including simulated DNA sequences, exon-intron and complete genomes. The results show that our method is more accurate and efficient for performing hierarchical clustering than other alignment-free methods and MSA methods.

In a previous paper, we described a natural closed subset, M 0 1,k(X,A; J), of the moduli space M1,k(X,A; J) of stable genusone J-holomorphic maps into a symplectic manifold X. In this paper we generalize the definition of the main component to moduli spaces of perturbed, in a restricted way, J-holomorphic maps and conclude that M 0 1,k(X,A; J), just like M1,k(X,A; J), carries a virtual fundamental class, which can be used to define symplectic invariants. These truly genus-one invariants constitute part of the standard genus-one Gromov-Witten invariants, which arise from the entire moduli space M1,k(X,A; J). The new invariants are more geometric and can be used to compute the genus-one GW-invariants of complete intersections, as shown in a separate paper.
