We introduce$objective partial groups$, of which the linking systems and$p$-local finite groups of Broto, Levi, and Oliver, the transporter systems of Oliver and Ventura, and the $${\mathcal{F}}$$ -localities of Puig are examples, as are groups in the ordinary sense. As an application we show that if $${\mathcal{F}}$$ is a saturated fusion system over a finite$p$-group then there exists a centric linking system $${\mathcal{L}}$$ having $${\mathcal{F}}$$ as its fusion system, and that $${\mathcal{L}}$$ is unique up to isomorphism. The proof relies on the classification of the finite simple groups in an indirect and—for that reason—perhaps ultimately removable way.

We consider weighted ray-transforms PW (weighted Radon transforms along oriented straight lines) in Rd,d≥2, with strictly positive weights W. We construct an example of such a transform with non-trivial kernel in the space of infinitely smooth compactly supported functions on Rd. In addition, the constructed weight W is rotation-invariant continuous and is infinitely smooth almost everywhere on Rd×Sd−1. In particular, by this construction we give counterexamples to some well-known injectivity results for weighted ray transforms for the case when the regularity of W is slightly relaxed. We also give examples of continous strictly positive W such that dimkerPW≥n in the space of infinitely smooth compactly supported functions on Rd for arbitrary n∈N∪{∞}, where W are infinitely smooth for d=2 and infinitely smooth almost everywhere for d≥3.

The classification work [5], [8] left unsettled only those anomalous isoparametric hypersurfaces with four principal curvatures and multiplicity pair {4, 5}, {6, 9}, or {7, 8} in the sphere. By systematically exploring the ideal theory in commutative algebra in conjunction with the geometry of isoparametric hypersurfaces, we show that an isoparametric hypersurface with four principal curvatures and multiplicities {4, 5} in S19 is homogeneous, and, moreover, an isoparametric hypersurface with four principal curvatures and multiplicities {6, 9} in S31 is either the inhomogeneous one constructed by Ferus, Karcher, and M¨unzner, or the one that is homogeneous. This classification reveals the striking resemblance between these two rather different types of isoparametric hypersurfaces in the homogeneous category, even though the one with multiplicities {6, 9} is of the type constructed by Ferus, Karcher, and M¨unzner and the one with multiplicities {4, 5} stands alone. The quaternion and the octonion algebras play a fundamental role in their geometric structures. A unifying theme in [5], [8], and the present sequel to them is Serre’s criterion of normal varieties. Its technical side pertinent to our situation that we developed in [5], [8] and extend in this sequel is instrumental. The classification leaves only the case of multiplicity pair {7, 8} open.

In this paper we present an error estimate for the explicit Runge-Kutta discontinuous Galerkin method to solve a linear hyperbolic equation in one dimension with discontinuous but piecewise smooth initial data. The discontinuous finite element space is made up of piecewise polynomials of arbitrary degree $k\geq1$, and time is advanced by the third order explicit total variation diminishing Runge-Kutta method under the standard CFL temporal-spatial condition. The $L^2(\mathbb{R}\backslash\mathcal{R}_T)$-norm error at the final time $T$ is optimal in both space and time, where $\mathcal{R}_T$ is the pollution region due to the initial discontinuity with the width $\mathcal{O}(\sqrt{T\beta}h^{1/2}\log(1/h))$. Here $h$ is the maximum cell length and $\beta$ is the flowing speed. These results are independent of the time step and hold also for the semi-discrete discontinuous Galerkin method.
