The spectral order on$R$^{$n$}induces a natural partial ordering on the manifold $\mathcal{H}_{n}$ of monic hyperbolic polynomials of degree$n$. We show that all differential operators of Laguerre–Pólya type preserve the spectral order. We also establish a global monotony property for infinite families of deformations of these operators parametrized by the space ℓ^{∞}of real bounded sequences. As a consequence, we deduce that the monoid $\mathcal{A}^{\prime}$ of linear operators that preserve averages of zero sets and hyperbolicity consists only of differential operators of Laguerre–Pólya type which are both extensive and isotonic. In particular, these results imply that any hyperbolic polynomial is the global minimum of its $\mathcal{A}^{\prime}$ -orbit and that Appell polynomials are characterized by a global minimum property with respect to the spectral order.

We consider two-dimensional critical bond percolation. Conditioned on the existence of an open circuit in an annulus, we show that the ratio of the expected size of the shortest open circuit to the expected size of the innermost circuit tends to zero as the side length of the annulus tends to infinity, the aspect ratio remaining fixed. The same proof yields a similar result for the lowest open crossing of a rectangle. In this last case, we answer a question of Kesten and Zhang by showing in addition that the ratio of the length of the shortest crossing to the length of the lowest tends to zero in probability. This suggests that the chemical distance in critical percolation is given by an exponent strictly smaller than that of the lowest path.

The authors establish error estimates for recently developed finite-element methods for incompressible viscous flow in domains with no-slip boundary conditions. The methods arise by discretization of a well-posed extended Navier-Stokes dynamics for which pressure is determined from current velocity and force fields. The methods use C1 elements for velocity and C0 elements for pressure. A stability estimate is proved for a related finite-element projection method close to classical time-splitting methods of Orszag, Israeli, DeVille and Karniadakis.

For each positive rational number ϵ, we define K-theoretic ϵ-stable quasimaps to certain GIT quotients $W\sslash G$. For ϵ>1, this recovers the K-theoretic Gromov-Witten theory of $W\sslash G$ introduced in more general context by Givental and Y.-P. Lee. For arbitrary ϵ1 and ϵ2 in different stability chambers, these K-theoretic quasimap invariants are expected to be related by wall-crossing formulas. We prove wall-crossing formulas for genus zero K-theoretic quasimap theory when the target $W\sslash G$ admits a torus action with isolated fixed points and isolated one-dimensional orbits.
