In this paper, we analyze the stability of the fourth order Runge-Kutta method for integrating semi-discrete approximations of time-dependent partial differential equations. Our study focuses on linear problems and covers general semi-bounded spatial discretizations. A counter example is given to show that the classical four-stage fourth order Runge-Kutta method can not preserve the one-step strong stability, even though the ordinary differential equation system is energy-decaying. But with an energy argument, we show that the strong stability property holds in two steps under an appropriate time step constraint. Based on this fact, the stability extends to general well-posed linear systems. As an application, we utilize the results to examine the stability of the fourth order Runge-Kutta approximations of several specific method of lines schemes for hyperbolic problems, including the spectral Galerkin method and the discontinuous Galerkin method.

In this paper, we apply high-order finite difference (FD) schemes for multispecies and multireaction detonations (MMD). In MMD, the density and pressure are positive and the mass fraction of the ith species in the chemical reaction, say zi, is between 0 and 1, with ∑z_i=1. Due to the lack of maximum-principle, most of the previous bound-preserving technique cannot be applied directly. To preserve those bounds, we will use the positivity-preserving technique to all the z′is and enforce ∑z_i=1 by constructing conservative schemes, thanks to conservative time integrations and consistent numerical fluxes in the system. Moreover, detonation is an extreme singular mode of flame propagation in premixed gas, and the model contains a significant stiff source. It is well known that for hyperbolic equations with stiff source, the transition points in the numerical approximations near the shocks may trigger spurious shock speed, leading to wrong shock position. Intuitively, the high-order weighted essentially non-oscillatory (WENO) scheme, which can suppress oscillations near the discontinuities, would be a good choice for spatial discretization. However, with the nonlinear weights, the numerical fluxes are no longer “consistent”, leading to nonconservative numerical schemes and the bound-preserving technique does not work. Numerical experiments demonstrate that, without further numerical techniques such as subcell resolutions, the conservative FD method with linear weights can yield better numerical approximations than the nonconservative WENO scheme.

We derive a lower bound on the ground state energy of the Hubbard model for given value of the total spin. In combination with the upper bound derived previously by Giuliani, our result proves that in the low density limit, the leading order correction compared to the ground state energy of a non-interacting lattice Fermi gas is given by $8\pi a \rho_u \rho_d$, where $\rho_{u(d)}$ denotes the density of the spin-up (down) particles, and $a$ is the scattering length of the contact interaction potential. This result extends previous work on the corresponding continuum model to the lattice case.

We provide an exhaustive description of all simply connected positively curved cohomogeneity one manifolds. The description yields a complete classification in all dimensions but 7, where in addition to known examples, our list contains one exceptional space and two infinite families not yet known to carry metrics of positive curvature. The infinite families also carry a 3-Sasakian metric of cohomogeneity one, which is associated to a family of selfdual Einstein orbifold metrics on the 4-sphere constructed by Hitchin.

We give a local classification of generalized complex structures. About a point, a generalized complex structure is equivalent to a product of a symplectic manifold with a holomorphic Poisson manifold. We use a Nash-Moser type argument in the style of Conn’s linearization theorem.
