Additive regression models have turned out to be a useful statistical tool in analyses of high-dimensional data sets. Recently, an estimator of additive components has been introduced by Linton and Nielsen which is based on marginal integration. The explicit definition of this estimator makes possible a fast computation and allows an asymptotic distribution theory. In this paper an asymptotic treatment of this estimate is offered for several models. A modification of this procedure is introduced. We consider weighted marginal integration for local linear fits and we show that this estimate has the following advantages.

Improving efficiency for regression coefficients and predicting trajectories of individuals are two important aspects in the analysis of longitudinal data. Both involve estimation of the covariance function. Yet challenges arise in estimating the covariance function of longitudinal data collected at irregular time points. A class of semiparametric models for the covariance function by that imposes a parametric correlation structure while allowing a nonparametric variance function is proposed. A kernel estimator for estimating the nonparametric variance function is developed. Two methods for estimating parameters in the correlation structurea quasi-likelihood approach and a minimum generalized variance methodare proposed. Varyingcoefficient linear models arise from multivariate nonparametric regression, nonlinear time series modelling and forecasting, functional data analysis, longitudinal data analysis and others. It has been a common practice to assume that the varying coefficients are functions of a given variable, which is often called an <i>index</i>. To enlarge the modelling capacity substantially, this paper explores a class of varyingcoefficient linear models in which the index is unknown and is estimated as a linear combination of regressors and/or other variables. We search for the index such that the derived varyingcoefficient model provides the least squares approximation to the underlying unknown multidimensional regression function. The search is implemented through a newly proposed hybrid backfitting algorithm. The core of the algorithm is the alternating iteration between estimating the index through a onestep scheme

With modern technology, massive data can easily be collected in a form of multiple sets of curves. New statistical challenge includes testing whether there is any statistically significant difference among these sets of curves. In this article we propose some new tests for comparing two groups of curves based on the adaptive Neyman test and the wavelet thresholding techniques introduced earlier by Fan. We demonstrate that these tests inherit the properties outlined by Fan and that they are simple and powerful for detecting differences between two sets of curves. We then further generalize the idea to compare multiple sets of curves, resulting in an adaptive high-dimensional analysis of variance, called HANOVA. Recent proposals for implementation of kernel-based nonparametric curve estimators are seen to be faster than naive direct implementations by factors up into the hundreds. The main ideas behind the two different approaches are made clear. Careful speed comparisons in a variety of settings and using a variety of machines and software are done. Various issues on computational accuracy and stability are also discussed. Our speed tests show that the fast methods are as fast or somewhat faster than methods traditionally considered very fast, such as LOWESS and smoothing splines.
