We consider the Dirichlet Laplacian for astrip in \mathbb{R}^2 with one straight boundary and a width \mathbb{R}^2 , where \mathbb{R}^2 is a smooth function of acompact support with a length 2<i>b</i>. We show that in the criticalcase, \mathbb{R}^2 , the operator has nobound statesfor small \mathbb{R}^2 .On the otherhand, a weakly bound state existsprovided \mathbb{R}^2 . In thatcase, there are positive <i>c</i> ₁,<i>c</i> ₂ suchthat the corresponding eigenvalue satisfies \mathbb{R}^2 for all \mathbb{R}^2 sufficiently small.

In this paper, we analyze a free quantum particle in a straight Dirichlet waveguide which has at its axis two Dirichlet barriers of lengths separated by a window of length 2a. It is known that if the barriers are semi-infinite, i.e., we have two adjacent waveguides coupled laterally through the boundary window, the system has for any a &gt; 0 a finite number of eigenvalues below the essential spectrum threshold. Here, we demonstrate that for large but finite the system has resonances which converge to the said eigenvalues as , and derive the leading term in the corresponding asymptotic expansion.

This paper discusses two common techniques in functional analysis: the topological method and the bornological method. In terms of Pietsch's operator ideals, we establish the equivalence of the notions of operators, topologies and bornologies. The approaches in the study of locally convex spaces of Grothendieck (via Banach space operators), Randtke (via continuous seminorms) and Hogbe-Nlend (via convex bounded sets) are compared.

We prove several rigidity theorems for elliptic genera associated to Toeplitz operators on odd dimensional spin manifolds. We also prove an equivariant odd index theorem for Dirac operators with involution parity and the Atiyah-Hirzebruch vanishing theorems for odd dimensional spin manifolds.

The classical Morse theory proceeds by considering sublevel sets f^{−1}(−∞,a] of a Morse function f:M→R, where M is a smooth finite-dimensional manifold. In this paper, we study the topology of the level sets f^{−1}(a) and give conditions under which the topology of f^{−1}(a) changes when passing a critical value. We show that for a general class of functions, which includes all exhaustive Morse functions, the topology of a regular level f^{−1}(a) always changes when passing a single critical point, unless the index of the critical point is half the dimension of the manifold M. When f is a natural Hamiltonian on a cotangent bundle, we obtain more precise results in terms of the topology of the base space. (Counter-)examples and applications to celestial mechanics are also discussed.
