This work considers the rigorous derivation of continuum models of step motion starting from a mesoscopic Burton-Cabrera-Frank (BCF) type model following the work [Xiang, SIAM J. Appl. Math. 2002]. We prove that as the lattice parameter goes to zero, for a finite time interval, a modified discrete model converges to the strong solution of the limiting PDE with first order convergence rate.

The dynamic stability of vortex solutions to the Ginzburg-Landau and nonlinear Schrdinger equations is the basic assumption of the asymptotic particle plus field description of interacting vortices. For the Ginzburg-Landau dynamics we prove that all vortices are asymptotically nonlinearly stable relative to small radial perturbations. Initially finite energy perturbations of vortices decay to zero in<i>L</i> ^<i>p</i>(²) spaces with an algebraic rate as time tends to infinity. We also prove that under general (nonradial) perturbations, the plus and minus one-vortices are linearly dynamically stable in<i>L</i> ²; the linearized operator has spectrum equal to (, 0] and generates a<i>C</i> ₀ semigroup of contractions on<i>L</i> ²(²). We study the wellposedness theory for the MHD boundary layer. The boundary layer equations are governed by the Prandtltype equations that are derived from the incompressible MHD system with nonslip boundary condition on the velocity and perfectly conducting condition on the magnetic field. Under the assumption that the initial tangential magnetic field is not zero, we establish the localitime existence, uniqueness of solutions for the nonlinear MHD boundary layer equations. Compared with the wellposedness theory of the classical Prandtl equations for which the monotonicity condition of the tangential velocity plays a crucial role, this monotonicity condition is not needed for the MHD boundary layer. This justifies the physical understanding that the magnetic field has a stabilizing effect on MHD boundary layer in rigorous mathematics. 2018 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Let $\mathcal{M} =\{m_{j}\}_{j=1}^{\infty}$ be a family of Marcinkiewicz multipliers of sufficient uniform smoothness in $\mathbb{R}^{n}$ . We show that the$L$^{$p$}norm, 1<$p$<∞, of the related maximal operator $$M_Nf(x)= \sup_{1\leq j \leq N} |\mathcal{F}^{-1} ( m_j \mathcal{F} f)|(x) $$ is at most$C$(log($N$+2))^{$n$/2}. We show that this bound is sharp.

Difference approximations of hyperbolic partial differential equations with highly oscillatory coefficients and initial values are studied. Analysis of strong and weak convergence is carried out in the practically interesting case when the discretization step sizes are essentially independent of the oscillatory wave lengths. © 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
