We estimate the heat conducted by a cluster of many small cavities. We show that the dominating heat is a sum, over the number of cavities, of the heat generated by each cavity after interacting with each other. This interaction is described through densities computable as solutions of a closed, and invertible, system of time domain integral equations of second kind. As an application of these expansions, we derive the effective heat conductivity which generates approximately the same heat as the cluster of cavities, distributed in a three-dimensional bounded domain, with explicit error estimates in terms of that cluster. At the analysis level, we use time domain integral equations. Doing that, we have two choices. First, we can favor the space variable by reducing the heat potentials to the ones related to the Laplace operator (avoiding Laplace transform). Second, we can favor the time variable by reducing the representation to the Abel integral operator. As the model under investigation has time-independent parameters, we follow the first approach here.

We study the large time asymptotic speeds (turbulent flame speeds sT) of the simplified HamiltonJacobi (HJ) models arising in turbulent combustion. One HJ model is G-equation describing the front motion law in the form of local normal velocity equal to a constant (laminar speed) plus the normal projection of fluid velocity. In level set formulation, G-equations are HJ equations with convex (L1 type) but non-coercive Hamiltonians. The other is the quadratically nonlinear (L2 type) inviscid HJ model of MajdaSouganidis derived from the KolmogorovPetrovskyPiskunov reactive fronts. Motivated by a question posed by Embid, Majda and Souganidis (1995)[10], we compare the turbulent flame speeds sTs from these inviscid HJ models in two-dimensional cellular flows or a periodic array of steady vortices via sharp asymptotic estimates in the regime of large amplitude. The estimates are obtained by analyzing the action minimizing trajectories in the Lagrangian representation of solutions (Lax formula and its extension) in combination with delicate gradient bound of viscosity solutions to the associated cell problem of homogenization. Though the inviscid turbulent flame speeds share the same leading order asymptotics, their difference due to nonlinearities is identified as a subtle double logarithm in the large flow amplitude from the sharp growth laws. ABSTRACT We investigate a kinetic model for the sedimentation of dilute suspensions of rod-like particles under gravity, deduced by Helzel, Otto, and Tzavaras (2011), which couples the impressible (Navier-)Stokes equation with the Fokker-Planck equation. With a no-flux boundary condition for the distribution function, we establish the existence and uniqueness of a global weak solution to the two dimensional model involving the Stokes equation.

We study the spectral geometric properties of the scalar Laplace–Beltrami operator associated to the Weil–Petersson metric $g_{WP}$ on $\mathcal{M}_{\gamma}$ , the Riemann moduli space of surfaces of genus  $\gamma>1$. This space has a singular compactification with respect to $g_{WP}$, and this metric has crossing cusp-edge singularities along a finite collection of simple normal crossing divisors. We prove first that the scalar Laplacian is essentially self-adjoint, which then implies that its spectrum is discrete.

The development of shocks in nonlinear hyperbolic conservation laws may be regularized through either diffusion or relaxation. However, we have observed surprisingly that for some physical problems, when both of the smoothing factors - diffusion and relaxation - coexist, under appropriate asymptotic assumptions, the dispersive waves are enhanced. This phenomenon is studied asymptotically in the sense of the Chapman-Enskog expansion and demonstrated numerically.
