In this paper, we study the global well-posedness of the 2D compressible NavierStokes equations with large initial data and vacuum. It is proved that if the shear viscosity<i></i> is a positive constant and the bulk viscosity <i></i> is the power function of the density, that is, <i></i>(<i></i>) = <i></i> ^<i></i> with <i></i> &gt; 3, then the 2D compressible NavierStokes equations with the periodic boundary conditions on the torus T 2 admit a unique global classical solution (<i>, u</i>) which may contain vacuums in an open set of T 2 . Note that the initial data can be arbitrarily large to contain vacuum states.

In this paper, we are concerned with the one-species VlasovPoissonBoltzmann system with a nonconstant background density in full space. There exists a stationary solution when the background density is a small perturbation of a positive constant state. We prove the nonlinear stability of solutions to the Cauchy problem near the stationary state in some Sobolev space without any time derivatives. This result is nontrivial even when the background density is a constant state. In the proof, the macroscopic balance laws are essentially used to deal with the a priori estimates on both the microscopic and macroscopic parts of the solution. Moreover, some interactive energy functionals are introduced to overcome difficulty stemming from the absence of time derivatives in the energy functional.

ABSTRACT We investigate a kinetic model for the sedimentation of dilute suspensions of rod-like particles under gravity, deduced by Helzel, Otto, and Tzavaras (2011), which couples the impressible (Navier-)Stokes equation with the Fokker-Planck equation. With a no-flux boundary condition for the distribution function, we establish the existence and uniqueness of a global weak solution to the two dimensional model involving the Stokes equation.

We prove the global existence and uniqueness of classical solutions around an equilibrium to the Boltzmann equation without angular cutoff in some Sobolev spaces. In addition, the solutions thus obtained are shown to be non-negative and <i>C</i>  in all variables for any positive time. In this paper, we study the Maxwellian molecule type collision operator with mild singularity. One of the key observations is the introduction of a new important norm related to the singular behavior of the cross section in the collision operator. This norm captures the essential properties of the singularity and yields precisely the dissipation of the linearized collision operator through the celebrated H-theorem.
